Anyone know what the maximum write speed of the Canon a620 is? I'd like to be sure I get a card that will keep up while not spending more than I need to. No point in spending the extra money on the speediest memory card if the camera can't make use of it.

I just bought a 1 gb lexar card for 74 bucks at B and H yeterday and have been playing with it in my a610 (same as 620 but 5.1 version) and it is great. It was the cheapest one they had. It will ofcourse be a fraction of a second slower with more megapixels on the a620. I think I remember the shooting speed on canon.com for the a620 was 2.4 and the a610 was 1.9. That's about what I am getting with my cheapo lexar card. An expensive card may be faster but for the casual user I don't think a fraction of a second is a big deal.

That wasn't quite what I was looking for but you did help me figure it out (approximately).

Based on the maximum resolution values of 3072x2304 for the a620 & 2592x1944 for the a610, and based on a continuous drive speed of 1.9 FPS (frames per second) for the a620 and 2.4 FPS for the a610, I got the following:

A620: 1.958MB max picture size, 3.720MB/sec
A610: 1.394MB max picture size, 3.345MB/sec
Movie mode: 640x480 @ 30 FPS = 2.550MB/sec

Not knowing how well the camer can multi-task (it hasn't been delivered yet, this is one thing I dislike about living overseas) I figured that perhaps building in a 50% buffer would be appropriate. That would bring the required write speed up to 5.58MB/sec.

So, now that I have a value, I just need to get a decent piece of SD memory. Since each speed multiplier equals 150KB/sec, I'll want a card that's rated at least at x34.

Since the posted numbers are based of tech specs as opposed to actually observed evidence, if anyone observes different numbers, like say for maximum file size, please correct me.

I tested a x66 speed card vs. a x150 speed card in a rather uunscientific test and it seems that they operate about the same speed in the camera. Ie, ,the camera doesn't take advantage of the extra speed the x150 card has to offer.

The manual indicates that an average size for a 3072x2304 picture shot in superfine mode would be about 3.045MB. At 1.9 pictures per second, you should be sure to get a card rated at least x40 to take advantage of the speed of the camera.

I tried a similar unscientific test using the A620, the 32MB card that came with the camera (slow?), and a 1MB x60 card (Sandisk Ultra II). I took me a while, but you can definitely tell the difference.

I selected Tv, superfine, "L"arge image, multiple images, no flash and took as many pictures as I could of a colorful background under bright lights. Using the 32MB card that came with the camera, the A620 stopped to write to the card after 4 images & roughly 2 seconds. The A620 also filled the memory card after only 5 images (the camera says it can get 9). The 60x 1MB card just keeps shooting images (2/sec) and never stopped to write to the card.

I have an A610 with a 1GB Sandisk Ultra II and after maybe 10 or so frames on continuous shooting, the shutter delay will noticeably increase to maybe 1-frame/sec.
