I just bought a 570is based on what folks here are saying. I'd like to know if the canon or ikelite housing is the better way to go. Thoughts?

I went through the same debate with mine. I opted for the Ikelite as it has a deeper depth rating, more expandability down the road (at least so I figured) plus at $300 it's not that much more.

The deciding point for me was cost. The Canon housing is more than half the cost of the Ikelite. In fact, the camera and Canon housing together can be bought for sub-$290.

But I suspect the Ikelite housing is more versatile. The Canon housing is rated for a depth of 130', and I don't expect to get too close to that depth and take pics at the same time.

What made me go with the ikelite is the ability to add on a wide angle lens. I was able to confirm that the ikelite was compatible with the lens...but I couldn't find ANYWHERE that said the Canon housing could do the same. Maybe if someone here chimes in that they have the canon housing and wide angle lens, it will be safe to go with canon.

Plus I just think the ikelite housing looked cooler

Hi everyone. Trying to decide on an u/w camera setup and I keep reading about the Canon A570is. I assume everyone on this post has one. How does everyone who owns it like this camera? How are the pictures? Clear, good light, easy to use? How are macro and wide angle underwater pictures? I'm trying to get an u/w camera setup (camera, strobe, housing) for under $1000 and I'm not sure what to get. Thanks for your help. You can e-mail me at Lnd7mike@yahoo.com.

Hi Linda!

Yes, I have the A570IS and the Ikelite underwater housing. I love them both. The cameras are now so cheap I bought a second one as a backup!

I love the camera underwater. I used to use an original sealife (DC100) and it ate batteries (one set per dive, or not even a whole dive). The 570 can use one set of rechargables for several dives, which I like, and the batteries are stock AA, not some pricey custom battery.

The camera and Ikelite housing are rated to 250 fsw, much deeper than the canon UW housing which I like, and was not that much more. The housing is compact enough that I can clip it off to a D-ring and not worry about the camera when diving until I want to take pictures.

My pictures are for the most part very good. I'm still getting used to the camera and getting the "range" for normal vs. macro settings. I use auto all the time with the built-in flash and am very happy with the results. My older camera would not focus well underwater - 8 of 10 shots were no good. Now I'm getting 8 of 10 shots as "keepers". There are some shots in my gallery on Scubaboard if you want to take a look.
