Can the firmware for the D9 be upgrade to show the last minute in seconds for the safety stop?
 
I agree, showing safety stop time in seconds would be a good thing.

But the whole safety stop time, not just the last minute.
 
No, unfortunately it cannot be upgraded.
Suunto must have heard you though as the new wristops, D9tx, D6i and the D4i, offer an underwater stopwatch in the dive mode (in additon to the safety stop countdown clock) which does count min:secs. This can come in handy for instructors who are timing student skills, deco stops and yes, safety stops.
