IIRC, this fish was bigger than I think of the typical school master, and the coloration is obviously different. Curious as to what kind it is.

Rich,
I believe that would be a mutton snapper. Note the dark spot on the body under the tail.

Here’s a picture of one with the same coloration.

Indeed, looks like a mutton.
 
Lane snapper also have the dark spot, but they have horizontal rather than vertical stripes.
 
Thanks, guys. Each year I assemble and have hard bound copies made of a large, land-scape family book. That mutton snapper is one of the photos I'm including from my Cozumel trip, and I like to include the names.
