Hi all...

I just finished another diving class in confined water today, I could manage my anxiety and panic much better this time, and also try not to exhale too much from my nose :)

But I still have and feel some or a bit water under my nose in my mask when underwater even after I cleared my mask underwater, is it normal?

cheers :coffee:

This November, I have a little bit of water under the nose, as I'm growing a mustache for Movember, and that mustache makes it hard to completely seal the mask. But usually, if the mask is properly sealed, it should be pretty dry.

If you're wearing a hood, check to make sure no part of it is under the mask. Make sure your mask is hair-free. Check to see if the edges are properly sealed to your face.

An unlikely case is that your mask isn't the right size, but you can do a check on land. Either way, a little bit of water in your mask is not a big deal. You can either clear your mask using the techniques you learned or just get used to a tiny amount of water under your nostrils.

Finally, ask your instructor. He can see any problems with your mask directly and immediately give you a solution.

That's quite normal. It sounds as if you still may be a bit uncomfortable with water on your face ( not unusual for beginners) while breathing. Control of the airways underwater is not always the easiest for everyone, but can be learned & mastered, & must be practiced again & again. One of the best things you can to is learn to breathe & be comfortable without a mask while the face is submerged. This can be done at home in a sink or tub or at a pool, standing in waist deep water using only your snorkel. If the feeling is too overwhelming, then all you have to do is raise your head out of the water. Eventually, you'll become so comfortable with it, you won't even notice it being there.

I have that issue too sometimes, eventhough for me it's not really an issue anymore :) it happens when I smile (I smile a lot :P ) and my cute puffy cheaks break the seal and let some water in. Get used to it, or tilt your head to the side so the water enters the glass area and then clear your mask :)

(I like to keep a tiny bit of water inside for when my glasses get foggy, so that's why I don't feel like it's an issue :) )

Fdge has a point there. There are times when I actually allow some water into the mask. It makes de-fogging underwater a lot easier. Its nothing to worry about.

Based on your picture, you need to get your hair away from the mask seal to reduce the leaking it causes. That will greatly reduce the water buildup in your mask. But you also need to get to the point where that water is just an annoyance and not any cause for alarm. That will come with experience.

It's pretty common. I don't have water in the nose if I put my mask on and it doesn't leak, but once water has gotten into it and I have to clear it, quite often a little water remains in the nose pocket. If I am willing to fuss with it and reposition my head and reclear several times, I can get every last drop out, but I rarely bother.

Thanks everyone! Glad to know that I'm not alone hehehehe...

@ Awap : yes...I think having some problem with my hair ... need to find a hood maybe to keep them nicely.

Just finished another open water dive today ... a bit deeper than last time ... went down to 16m for a couple minutes then up to 14m then 9.6m and cruised around...wonderful ... and I start to ignore that little water under the nose, I even did mask clearing better than last dive ...

Thanks again ALL! Cheers! :coffee:
