My 9yo is turning 10 this November and wants to dive. She is very small - 4 ft 2 in. I'm looking for advice on a gear and any other considerations. I dive backplate but just want to get her into the best BCD for her to get started in.

We have an urge to start off kids with the same gear we have because.....it's the best, right?

But the priority at such an early age should be developing skills first, in gear that fits properly and is comfortable. In most cases, and especially for someone small, that is going to be an appropriately sized traditional BC.

Focus on her comfort, water confidence and basic skills at first; transition her to specific gear once her growth slows down and it's clear she is committed to diving.

How comfortable is she snorkeling? That's usually a good predicter of scuba success for kids.

Are you taking her someplace warm with good vis?

Best of luck!

I got my 12 year old a Dive rite travel pac and wing. It's fully padded and not as heavy as a full backplate but still has al the benefits of one. Plus there's plenty of webbing that I can adjust as she grows. I've even fit it to my 10 year old that is around 4'6" so that he was comfortable in it and managed to get to me as well (I'm 6' 3" and 200lbs). If she does somehow outgrow it, I can just put a BP and harness on the same wing and accessories.
