"The increasing pixel counts of digital still cameras and the growing use of these cameras for advanced audio and video recording are driving the demand for higher capacity storage," said John D. Blakeslee, business manager, digital memory products, Olympus Imaging America. "Olympus plans to apply this high-capacity technology to develop the xD-Picture Card for Olympus digital cameras with memory capacities eventually reaching up to 8GB."

this is a quote from http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_PressDetails.asp?pressNo=475

hhhmmm i wonder when we can get this 8GB XD???!!!

Wow! These Oly guys are quick on their feet. What is it, 10gb on SD now with prices down to about $7-8 a gig? Maybe I exagerate, but not by much. How about a 5 gig card by the end of the year, for not more than $100. Then I won't have to pull my camera out after every dive to change memory.

Everybody knows about the quickness of Olympus obsolescence, though. The way this will play out is that your Olympus won't be compatible with the higher memory cards, therefore you will need to upgrade!

Oly were talking about 8Gb capacity in early 2004 already and they have only just made 2GB - don't hold your breath. And it's a slower M Type.

Yeah but Larry C, will the battery last that long? The M2 GB of XD is so far compactible with SP350. I hope all the bigger memory of XD in tehe future b compactible as well.

also Larry C, can u kindly let me know your "mode"setup when taking Macro and wide angle shots?

Thanks.

Let us all know...I need to set mine up!

No thanks I will stick to the nokons and their CF/microdrive slots or I could downgrade to a *gasp* lowly SD card

I use mainly 2 "my modes". I just set the camera to manual and a base setting of f5.6 and shutter of 1/60 for local Monterey water, 1/125 for more tropical locales. For macro, I set it on macro and spot focus with auto focus on. For wide, I set it on manual focus with iESP. White balance is auto. Flash is outboard only, sync 1. When the settings are where you want them, just go to "settings" and scroll down to "my mode settings". Right scroll to "current" for my mode # (1,2,3,4) pick your mode # and hit OK to save. When you've saved it, just change to "my mode" on the top adjuster wheel, pick your number and ready to shoot. You can then use the scroll up/down and the scroll left/right to adjust the f stop, shutter speed and focal distance. In manual focus, it wants to only set the distance once for some reason, then the scroll becomes shutter speed. Haven't yet figured how to change between except to click focus mode between auto and manual and once back to manual, it will let me adjust the focal distance again. You can also use your custom button settings to set a different button for quick access to any menu item. On the Cathy Church rentals, they set the AEL button as a "my mode" instant access. I've been having trouble with the autofocus on supermacro and am getting ready to try manual focus on that. It works great on auto topside, but underwater I often get blurs due to stuff moving around in the focal area and confusing the autofocus. Might also work better if I turned the supermacro on full time AF. Haven't tried that. At any rate, all this goes in a different thread (I've posted most of it in the SP-350 thread)

PS I always shoot RAW (unless I'm really cramming the end of the memory-then I'll switch to SHQ to stuff 15-20 more pics on what would be the last 2-3 with RAW) and I convert them with Rawshooter essentials (free download, but your computer had better be up to date and have 512megs to a gig of RAM) I do final touch up on PS-7 and after saving, I shrink them for posting on photobucket and save a second copy with "small" or just "sm" added to the title for the small copy. Count on spending about 3 hours in front of your screen to do a decent job on a gig of RAW-about 82 shots.

Thanks for the advice...now I just need to find time to play with it.
