Not sure how many people here use a 5D for UW photography but there may be more of you that have the camera for topside shooting. In any event here is a link to canon's site announcing the recall. This applies ONLY to the original 5D. The 5D mkII is not part of the recall. Also seems to imply any owner, not just the original owner can get the free fix.

About 4 months ago, I actually had the mirror of my 5D come right off during the middle of shooting a wedding. Not cool. But Canon fixed it for free, even though it was out of warranty, and explained that earlier models had a bad batch of glue. They replaced the entire mirror box assembly.

May not be a widespread problem but having the mirror fall off and possibly cracking and damaging the sensor would seriously blow your present mental state. I'd recommend getting the fix if you can spare the few weeks it will be gone.

I also would think it would be a good selling point, should you ever sell your 5D, to say you've had the mirror box assembly proactively replaced. Got to find the sliver lining somewhere...

Aloha,
Greg

Thanks for the information. It would really suck to have that break on a trip.
