Looks like I missed all the good deals on the 570IS and now they are getting hard to find. It has been replaced by the 590IS. Currently there is no Canon housing for the 590. Does anyone know if Canon plans on releasing one?

Dave

Try real hard to find one because the 570IS is a better setup for UW than the 590IS.

I haven't spent much time looking at the 590. How is the UW setup different?

No housing available!

I think the movie mode is different as well and I did not see an UW mode listed in the specs but perhaps I missed it.

Everyone will have to go to the 720IS..........I was going to guess thiss about the 570 a couple months ago when they got dirt cheap, makes sense now............

The 720IS has a square port housing and long zoom--bad--bad. It cannot accept Inon lenses and with any sort of adapter you will get severe vignetting. Same with the G9 with some possible exception with the short port Ike and thread on Inon lenses (instead of the AD bayonet type). The Ike houisng for the 590IS does not accept the Inon lenses either and it cost twice the price of the camera. I have an Ike houisng for one of my two 570s and I prefer the Canon DC12 housing. It is smaller, fits better, is easier to use, accepts the Inon AD lenses without hassle and just works great all the way down to 150 feet--ooops--three times---triple oooops!

If you can, try hard, get yourself the 570 and DC12 before they are completely gone.

I found an open box model with full warranty for a little over $100 and snapped it up. Housing is next. My guess is that I'll also buy a cheap used backup camera on ebay somewhere down the road.

From what I've seen, the 570IS can do some decent shots without a strobe (better than my current Olympus). However, if I did want to get a strobe (and not spend a fortune) what is a good choice with the DC12 housing?

Answer, Inon D2000, hands down the winner IMO.

Top and bottom no flash, middle I used the Inon D2000 to try with some success to light up the cigar minnows in the foreground as they trailed off into infnity.

And my response to your edit, strobes have always been high dollars. The internal strobe sorta works as long as you don't use wet mount lenses which also cost a fortune. A "fortune" is a relative term. I bought the little 570 because I did not wish to lug around a honking huge DSLR with all of the fuss and bother and investment in something that is always obsolete the day before you buy it -not because I could not afford the fortune to buy one.

1. Actually these days you can fit Inon wetmate lenses (macro and W/A) to Canon P&S housings with oval ports (DC6, 8, 11 or DC16, 18, 21) by using an Inon M67 adapter.

http://www.uwdigitalcamera.com/goods_list.php?Index=305

To use these add-ons you will first need to purchase a lense adapter like Inon M67 lense adapter for Canon DC housings that can be found at:

UWdigitalcamera.comhttp://www.uwdigitalcamera.com/goods_list.php?Index=305http://www.uwdigitalcamera.com/goods_detail.php?goodsIdx=217

The following is a quote from their website.

"M67 Lens adapter for Canon DC housings

This item is the 67mm lens adapter for Canon DC housings which have oval port ( DC6,8,11 or DC16,18,21)

You can use 67mm thread type close-up lenses with your Canon housing. It also accept 67mm wide conversion lens physically, but by the reason of camera lens construction, you see hard vignetting ( black shadow of the corners) and it is no use. These powershot cameras, when you use wide side zoom, the lens position is at the far side from the port glass."

Regarding W/A attachment lenses - as you can see in the quote above from their website they aren't really recommended for the Canon P&S housing with an oval port like the DC-16 housing that is used for the A720IS. But I also saw the following response from Yuzo of

UWdigitalcamera.com

to another Scubaboard member on this subject and here is what he had to say.

"For DC8/18 or DC6/16, it is possible to use UWL-100 with some zooming up but not recommended. Even with these, you see some blooming of the image.

But with DC11 or DC21, you see hard vignetting and blooming of image, and I say it is impossible to use."

So it appears that a W/A attachment lense is an option for the A720/DC-16 setup depending upon what you want to do with it but doesn't work well if you attempt to use too much zoom with the W/A lense.

2. I believe my next purchase will be the INON UCL-165 M67 Close-up Lens.

3. Like Nemrod said, if you can manage to get your hands on an A570IS / WP-DC12 setup you will probably find it too your liking.
