How often do you think the largest synchronous migration of biomass on Earth takes place? Once a decade? Annually?

Actually, it happens each and every night. Known as the diurnal vertical migration, marine creatures, both pelagic and larval, swim from hundreds of feet below the ocean surface toward the shallows in search of food. Put yourself in the right place and you can be witness as untold numbers of fascinating, alien-looking creatures move through the water column. This is what's known as blackwater diving.

Our September speaker, Linda Ianniello, literally wrote the book on blackwater diving. Co-written with Susan Mears, BLACKWATER Creatures is both a stunning catalog of organisms that even the best science fiction writers couldn't imagine and a useful reference for blackwater divers and photographers new and old. I saw copies of the book on the last two CHUM trips - at the dive shop near Blue Heron Bridge and also in the Fling's library beside their battery charging station.

Please join us at 7:30 pm on Thursday, September 15th as Linda shares stories and photos from her blackwater adventures and tells us how we can experience these wonders ourselves.
