I read somewhere that some dive shops fill LP steel tanks (2,400 PSI) as they do with aluminum tanks (i.e. 3,000 PSI).
Recognizing that it is not recommended to go over the manufacturer's specifications, would it be of any value to put a 3,000 PSI valve on a LP steel tank to prevent damage to the valve if / when the tank is overfilled?

Actually, most shops around the caves will fill LP steels to 3600psi. Many shops not around the FL caves will fill LP tanks to 3000 just because they don't know better.

However, the valve is fine.....the burst disc will need to be upgraded.

I once had a tank filler on a well-known charter boat that goes to the Flower Gardens refuse to fill my HP100 to 3442 because the valve had a sticker that said "3000 PSI". He really thought that meant the service pressure of the valve was 3K and that it would explode if the tank was filled higher. The valve has a clearly marked 5250 burst disc.

There's a rather impressive widespread level of idiocy when it comes to filling scuba tanks.
