Switching from a G250HP to an S600 is actually a step in the wrong direction. The S600 is smaller, but as CMAN points out, it is internally identical. So in effect with the smaller S600 you get a smaller diaphragm that requires a greater pressure differential to operate those identical internal parts and, all other things being equal, it requirs a slightyl higher inhalation effort to operate.
In addition, the G250HP is slightly heavier due to it's larger case and diahragm, but it also displaces more water, so the extra weight is offset by the extra bouyancy in the water and the S600's "less jaw fatigue" argument does not hold water.
The G250V utilizes a metal air barrel that improves both heat transfer and moisture retention, making it a better choice for cold water and for longer dives where dry mouth may otherwise be an issue.
In addition, the G250V represents a return to the older G250 design and it eliminates the excessive complexity, parts count and multiple o-rings used in the adjustment knob of the G250HP and S600. It is a better second stage all the way around.
The Mk 17 is in my opinion the best first stage currently available on the market. It is very reliable, offers more than enough performace for any recreational or technical purpose and is the most bullet proof cold water reg currently available.
