2 Turkish divers killed in underwater explosion near Georgian Black Sea port

20:15, January 21, 2011

Two scuba divers from Turkey have been killed by an underwater explosion from a sunken ship, local media on Friday identified the two Turkish nationals.

The divers, who were working on the extraction of the sunken Ukrainian ship christened as Skaldovski, were identified as Erkan Karsky and Murad Kara Oglu, according to the CaucasusPress news service.

The two divers were killed on Thursday. They were employees of the Turkish company of Kuzeyin Marine.

The ship sank last year during a storm.

Preliminary probe indicated that the explosion could have been caused by the inflammable hydrogen accumulated inside the ship which sank outside the Georgian Black Sea oil-export port of Kulevi. The two divers were supposed to use a welder to fix the ship.

Representatives from the SOCAR Georgia Petroleum Ltd., an affiliate with the Azerbaijani State Oil Company SOCAR, have ruled out the possibility that the leak-out of oil products had caused the underwater explosion.

In December last year, another diver got himself badly injured while working underwater off the port of Kulevi.

From what I know underwater welding generates hydrogen gas, if there's an overhead obstruction that can trap a sufficiently large pocket of hydrogen and exhaled oxygen it can cause a significant explosion if ignited by the welding or some other source.
