Hey Divers,

My wife and I have planned our 1st dive trip to Bonaire. We will be staying at Buddy Dive, and will be there from Oct. 2-8. For anyone who has been there feel free to send your tips our way. Thanks.

Welcome to the board.
Hug Lortus for me, the sweetest ladie you will ever meet and pet Puck, the resort dog. The resort and dive staff at BD are first rate. You will quickly feel like family, same goes for pretty much the rest of the island. Myself and others have posted a lot on Bonaire over the years, do a search on my name and Bonaire, you will find loads of stuff. For a quick list of suggestions lets see:

Money: The guilder(Nfl) is worth about $0.56 UD or I use 2x1 as a rough guide. Most places have prices in both but if things look about 2x what they are at home, it's most likely in guilders. You can use either credit cards or cash. The ATMs will take your card and give you cash in UDS or Guilders, your choice. I have stopped carring much cash with me and use the ATMs and credit cards. I tend to use Guilders, adds to the adventure of the trip if nothing else. There are 3 and 5 guilders coins which add up quick. If you pay in USD, most likely you will get change in Guilders. Most places will take both but some of the small "snacks" will not. There is an ATM located in frount of Sand Dollar resort which is next to BD, a very easy walk....besides it gives you an excuse to stop at Lovers Ice Cream which is next door to the bank.

Food: There are tons of places to eat on Bonaire, I have yet to find a bad place. Just a very few are Casa Blanca, Richards, Bobby Jans, City Cafe, The Rib Factory and Donna and Georgieos. There are many more. If you want an adventure, get up with the guys on the Bonairetalk board and visit with them at Gibi's on Tues night. It's a don't miss for me. The mixed grill at Casa Blanca's is huge, get it early in the week and have lunch for the rest of the week. City Cafe has one of the best burgers I know of anywhere and the view is great.

Water: Its safe to drink and please do drink LOTS of it. You will dehydrate very quickly on Bonaire. We buy a 1L bottle each when we arrive and refill it from the tap all week. An empty 2L bottle with small holes in it makes a great after dive shower if you leave it in the sun.

Safety: While Bonaire is safe from a personal perspective, DON"T leave anything in your vehicles that has any worth to you. I leave the windows rolled down and in 9 trips have never has anything taken but it does happen and leaving anything in a locked vehicle is not a good idea. You are never very far from your resort so leave anything you are not taking with you diving at the room. I carry 1 credit card, the room/truck keys and a few guilders along with me on dives in a waterproof (yea right) case. Merchants on Boniare are use to wet money but with the 3 and 5 Nfl coins, you don't really have to carry paper money.

General: If you need anything kind of computer or communications (email or need to phone home) drop by the Chat and Browse which is beside Lovers Ice Cream. Micheal is a great guy and is a handy resourse if you need something, if he does not have it, he knows who does..He can also transfer digital photos to CD's if you have loaded your cameras memory and need more. There is a $20pp exit tax you must pay at the airport. You MUST pay this BEFORE you check in at the airline so before you get in line, go to the booth at the far right of the airport and pay the tax.

I know Bonaire and BD very well, drop me a PM if you have specific questions.

also when you get there and get to the dive shop. Ask to get a copy of the yellow book it is about 12 bucks US but well worth it to help plan your dives. It includes info on life at the reef entry points, easy med, difficult, and the level of diver you should be for the area. It is a good source to have if shore diving there.

U gotta hit casablancas for dinner steaks are huge and great. Richards has great fish and a great view. Nice during sunset hours for dinner. Old Inn by plaza's entrance has subs at lunch for about 6 bucks with fries.

Dave, I was in Bonaire all last week and stayed at Buddy Dive...this was my 5th trip to Bonaire and 1st at Buddy. Herman hit it all the head, so I just wanted to chime in and support it.

I will stay at Buddy Dive again....IMO they have the best fill station setup for shore diving as well as the best restaurant food and customer service wise.....I am talking about Lion's restaurant. You'll have a great time there....

We wished we had some booties with a heavy shoe sole. Our tropical weight booties didn't give much protection on some the entries.

Great point. The shore line is iron stone and coral rubble, very few sandy beaches. Hard soled booties are a must.

I just posted some Bonaire pictures on the local site, come take a look.

Also, if you have not already, come join us on the Bonaire board. Tons of info and a lot of great people.

Herman is right on the money!

BobbyJans was great! Wish they were open all week!
The people at Chat & Browse were so friendly. Liked Lovers Ice Cream, next door too! (yum) Plus, there is a little grocery store in that same strip mall.
Learned my lesson the hard way on leaving items in the car.

We did not dive with him, but had heard nothing but good comments. So, if your so inclined, check out Larry's Wildside Diving. His signs are all over the island. We just happened to meet him one afternoon. We were at the Barracuda Club, he was sitting next to us at the bar & he struck up a conversation. A really nice guy.

Bonaire sounds great, but I'm still a fairly new diver, and am more comfortable diving with a divemaster. Sounds like Bonaire is mostly self-serve. Are there still opportunities for a newbie?

While Bonaire is mostly do it yourself, the diving is as easy or as tech as YOU want it to be. While I am quite comfortable at 100ft, 99% of my dives on Bonaire are in 35ft or less. That's where most of the fish and coral are, I like bottom time and could care less about being deep. If you are comfortable doing a quarry dive with a buddy then Bonaire is no sweat. You can always do boat dives which have a DM in the water with you but you are not required to follow them if you so choose. The typical Bonaire shore dive is you wade into the water and decend at maybe 10 ft, follow the bottom until you reach the dropoff which is in around 35 ft of water. The dropoff on Bonaire is very easy to see as the bottom slope changes from just a few degrees to about a 75 to 80 deg drop (almost staight down). When you find the dropoff, you turn into the current and follow the drop. It is possible to go on down the slope to anywhere from 80 ft to over 300 depending where you are on the island but I see no reason to (well I do like one wreck dive at 100ft but nothing says you have to do it). Very easy. Granted, it is better if you have some experienced divers along but plenty of divers make Bonaire their first trip. It's fairly easy to hook up with more experienced divers on Bonaire if you ask around or you can always rent a DM to go with you on your first few dives. You can always join a group heading to Bonaire, unless you are unsafe or a complete horses rearend, most anyone is happy to take new divers along. (There is a Bonaire trip coming up that I am sure I... um.....I mean someone on the trip, would be happy to dive with you. :) ) You have to learn to dive on your own sometime and place. I can think of no better place.
