Much larger waves are known...

For sure. I saw green water breaking over the helipad on a platform that was 135'/41M off mean low water in January at Ekofisk off Norway. We weren't flying or transferring to supply boats that day. I hear it is worse in Arctic seas.
 
It's not about the height of the particular wave...it's about the height of that particular wave in comparison to other waves around it in the same sea at that same moment in time.
