Scuba accident in a swimming pool close to my house

@SlugMug I could have worded that better, my point was it won't leak if you get to the point where the O-ring is in place (and I would hope nobody would try to fill a tank with a valve half unscrewed), so that tell won't happen. I'm very much aware of what this thread is about.

Scuba accident in a swimming pool close to my house

@runsongas straight thread relies on the o-ring for teh actual seal, so leaking won’t be an issue. Diameter is also slightly different, iirc.

Scuba accident in a swimming pool close to my house

@runsongas it gets better, there’s also the old French 25x2 SI standard (not the quite the same as M25x2), and of course the American DOT NPSM 3/4” which is not the same as G3/4”.

Scuba accident in a swimming pool close to my house

One of the issues is that not all tanks and/or valves are marked with this particular information. Ideally they should be, of course, but there is no legal requirement here from a tank certification perspective. It'll only fail if the threads are damaged; I'm not clear this troublesome...

Scuba accident in a swimming pool close to my house

@MarkA iirc M25x2 became the European standard in the 90s, and after a grace periode became mandatory in the mid 00s 2010 for new tanks. Before that BSPP 3/4” (known as G3/4” here) was common. So it’s mostly old tanks, as most tanks before that were already standards-compliant. Of course, tanks...

Scuba accident in a swimming pool close to my house

@barth Sure, but that is still a hands-on moment. And I would assume the threads are still checked in this process. I know tanks failed on this; but I'm not sure this damages the threads enough to fail a caliber test. @DandyDon Either missed, or markings were absent. I know at least one issue...

Scuba accident in a swimming pool close to my house

As expected, unfortunately. Sad this still happens, as it's a known issue. The tank also passed inspection and hydro a couple of times. Perhaps the wrong valve was added more recently?

Scuba accident in a swimming pool close to my house

It's being investigated by Dutch OSHA, as this happed during a club training activity, which falls under their jurisdiction. The original Reddit post was from shortly after the accident itself happed, written by a witness to the event. At this point the victim was still alive and transferred...

    not a shearwater fan ?

For me it's a toss between Shearwater and the Heinrichs Weihkamp (OSTC) computers. I own both, recently switched to a Perdix AI because the OSTC2 TR (AI model) failed to deliver reliable AI. Display on the OSTCs is better (bonded display, unlike the Perdix, so much higher viewing angle. Not a...

    Reviews on Triton's Abacus / divecomputer.eu anyone?

Slightly off-tppic: Both Croatia and Greece (poster's location) are in the EU, meaning no import tax, but also no tax refunds when ordering from EU member countries.

Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

Not intending to be reasons not to implement something like it, but two thoughts: - A closed charging cabinet would need substantial ventilation, especially in warmer climates. - Charging on a schedule would probably result in a push towards faster charging, which in itself increases risk of...

In similar vein, basic fire fighting training covering the use of basic firefighting tools such as handheld extinguishers may be available at your local firestation, or even your employer. These show you how they work, and give you some of the basics, including when to call it quits as an amateur.

Nice and clear video. I have to admit that this made me somewhat reconsider that escape hatch. It doesn't actually look as bad as my first impressions were, from a 'could I get out' perspective. Which is not the same as 'appropriate for >30 passengers'.

The last reports seem to indicate that when it was detected by the crew, essentially the aft portion of the salon was on fire. Thy jumped down (I assume either on the side or front of the boat), and found the galley was inaccessible due to thick smoke, and the rear by fire. That would suggest to...

Tough love for the industry's lithium addiction

That looks like a dime-a-dozen light to me, running on standard batteries. Those can be rechargeable, but not in the light itself. To be honest, I didn't even know (formally; sold as such) rechargeable alkaline batteries was a thing, which apparently it is. I did know you could practically do...

I believe those are essentially different but related effects, backdraft and flashover. The first is essentially hot gas staved of oxygen, so when oxygen suddenly becomes available (a window breaks, a door opens) it suddenly and violently ignites. The second is the buildup from hot gas from a...

    Ultimate Dive Truck

Funny, coming from the Netherlands, I'm still thrilled about the fuel prices, in liters. :D One at a time? We've regularly done 2, and 3 is doable. We had some 1 gallon jugs of water in the back for just that. We kept refilling those as needed. -- I've had the pleasure of seeing much of the...

Something to keep in mind is that tents tend to be flammable too. There's a couple of incidents with them burning down each year. Essentially, be careful not unknowingly mitigate one risk with another.

I'm not sure why suggesting chargers/batteries as a possible cause of the fire seems to rub some people the wrong way to this extent.

I see your point. Personally, I read that as 'the standards that currently apply to it'.
