    Girlfriend doesn’t dive vacation

Bermuda, it is expensive, and the coral and fish are different than in Coz or the Carribean due to the more northern location. Island is safe, and close to the east coast (<2hr flight form NYC).

    Coolest/Most Unique "Finds" While Diving?

This occurred 40+ years ago. We were diving in New Jersey. The group was a friend and I, and three friends of that friend, one of whom owned the boat. Part of the dive was set to go through some cement“tunnels" (they looked like 6 foot wide cement drainage pipes, separated, in lengths of 20-25...

DIR- Generic Diver attitude! Be careful, experienced divers...

Quick story on the topic of scuba "Karens", and gear: On a boat a few years back I had just finished setting up my gear, seated on the bench. In front of me was my gear bag, upon which rested a three inch “spring clamp”,aka “suicide clamp”. A woman diver came by and noted the clamp. She began...

    Great Dive shop in Bermuda?

    Another vote for Dive Bermuda.

    Own or rent?

IMHO, I would lean towards buying and traveling with all your gear (except for weights). It is admittedly a pain when it comes to packing, cost (especially, for airfare for the extra bag,) and physically trying to get around with all the stuff. That said, I believe it is worth the aggravation...

Going through the airport with my gear for the first time

In my carry on goes regulators, computers, mask, Gloves (to cushion the mask). With the people running the scanners, I would get about a 40-60 split Between those who looked at The image on the screen, ask “dive gear?" and when I said yes, wave me through. The majority of the time however, my...

Why did Horse Collar BC's fade away?

First certified in 1973, in NJ- with horse collar and plastic back pack. Didn't dive too much, for a variety of reasons. In 1983, I had the opportunity to try vacation/ warm water diving. I brought my gear (recently serviced). The dive shop rental gear, and the gear of all the other divers that...

    Sat out my first dive

I have to get to work, so I quickly read through the thread, and this is probably already posted, but just in case, remember the "rule" that says "any diver can call any dive of theirs for any reason, without getting crap from anyone else"

    Hernia repair

I had the surgery just under two years ago. It was for an "extra large" (according to the surgeon) Inguinal hernia. The surgery, which took about an hour and a half, was laparoscopic (3 incisions each about 1/2 inch long) and robotic- the Doctor sat at a computer console, which looked...

Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated...

So sorry to hear that Pete. Having been through something similar with parents and a friend, when the end finally happens, it's still a shock. Take your time to grieve, then try to remember the good times , and that she is now at rest and no longer hurting.

Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated...

Pete, sorry to hear of this situation. You are one heck of a brother to give so much care to your sister. It may sound like crap, but she will shortly not be in pain, no longer suffering. Sending good thoughts and prayers to you both

Can anyone identify this (NON-) creature?

I also thought "ashes urn". Additionally: It looks like a beer can/soda can on top with “swim goggles” around it. If so,that might be a clue as to what/who it is . (or it might be my eyesight / imagination :) )

Has Your Dive Guide Ever Gotten Lost?

Yeah, I've been with dive guides who've gotten lost due to it being their first or second time on a particular site, or if visibility suddenly changes drastically for the worse. I was once diving with a relatively new guide, and while doing the safety stop the water suddenly change from clear...

    Is horizontal position really better?

I remember a (the?) very very heated, very long thread here on that topic (off gassing position). Yes, a long time ago, yes I am old!

Places to avoid in the Caribbean?

(disclaimer: I haven't read the thread to see if this is repeat info) Went to Jamaica 20+ years ago. one time only. Not going back because of: the pushy drug salesmen at the airport and outside the bus windows as we moved through town to the resort; the cautions from the resort staff to not...

    Hand signal to end/terminate dive?

I was also taught that "thumbs up" meant "dive is over- head to surface (or first deco stop). I've also seen the“timeout signal with the vertical three fingers" to mean ascend for the three minute safety stop. Also the finger pointing up, with some indication of to what depth should you ascend...
