Cayman - Picture of the Day

Contemplate looking beyond Grand Cayman. Cayman Brac has a decent number of homes available for rent; my photo is at a 2BR house we've stayed at. Its MSRP is {EDIT: in Spring 2023 was} officially $233/night, but as a repeat customer, they trusted us to do a cash deal so it worked out to be...

Cayman - Picture of the Day

Been awhile... Lighthouse Reef, Cayman Brac southside. Backstory: A dive buddy always goes to Bonaire, not the Caymans. I clipped this out of a video to tease him about how he's just swimming over the reef instead of being in the reef, as the vertical relief here is ~20ft (its just shy...

Cayman - Picture of the Day

Man, its been way too long since I've contributed to my own thread! Pre-CoVid (May 2019) trip .. a blacktip on a thursday morning on Little Cayman, hanging around the divers, hoping for a lionfish hangout.

    PO2 Max - Why 1.4/1.6?

Some useful trivia for you: The UK "Charioteers" were using rebreathers that weren't pure O2 and thus, had a slightly better OxTox tolerance. The book "Above us the Waves" was published in the 1950s before this was declassified, but if you read that book with this knowledge, you can see...

Goodness, been so busy (been a long time since a post on SB). In any event, here's a Hawksbill from this past spring on the 356 Wreck on Cayman Brac -hh

Tragic And Mind-boggling - Cayman's Cruise Ship Solution

I'm going to have to read into this further, but I've already considered the Wild Card: CUBA. Cuba opening up to US tourism is inevitable ... and "poof!" the cruise ships will all add it as a port and drop someone (guess who?). It will also affect air too, sure. Question is if it will be...

    Cayman Brac/Little Cayman Dive Report

hmm...can you plan for a week on each? 1). The Brac has better transportation access. Little only gets Express flights. Whereas the Brac has that plus occasional 737 jet flights ... and do be aware that the Express has more stringent luggage restrictions than the 737. We generally take the...

    Customs from Little Cayman?

That sounds a little irregular...I've flown that route and because one does have to retrieve bags, go thru customs & the on re-check luggage, the less generous requirements of the Cayman Airways Express usually kick in. I've even had them TRY to impose baggage fees when they've cancelled the...

new Suunto Vyper ... won't turn on

Just picked up a new Suunto Vyper Air to replace my plain old Vyper which had finally died. Unboxed it, went to turn it on ... nothing. Time to troubleshoot: a) Dead Battery? b) Defective Unit? c) Needed some sort of pre-customer setup? Suggestions? I'll probably try a replacement...

ScubaPro's customer support warranties ("limited lifetime" & parts for life)

Which is unfortunate, because Social Media has given them the opportunity to hear, identify and resolve customer concerns at a much lower level. Oh, wonderful: when I retire in a few years and move to another region, that just becomes one more potential headache in finding a good new dive...

ScubaPro's customer support warranties ("limited lifetime" & parts for life)

There's lots of SP regs which have been discontinued - - the PFL supportability question comes into play when ScubaPro choose to also discontinue the parts kits. To that end, I was told by my LDS that they've been running into problems getting SP parts kits for the Mk200 and Mk15 first stages...

ScubaPro's customer support warranties ("limited lifetime" & parts for life)

The sticky post on the Parts for Life question says: "SCUBAPRO regulator limited lifetime warranty has NOT BEEN CHANGED OR ALTERED." In reading on, it appears that ScubaPro stands behind their products through two different programs: 1. Warranty: this covers any defects, and it comes in...

    Aging 1st stage

If memory serves, there were three (3) different revisions to the Mk25 ... one of them was recalled by ScubaPro, so I'd definitely try to get it tracked down. Your LDS who can do a rebuild on it will probably figure all of that out if you take it in for a service. -hh

Cayman - Picture of the Day

I assume that going "tween" was probably years ago in one of the old Divi boats? The Newtons have a much broader beam. In any case, got up to dive here with Brac Scuba Shack last fall ... did a dive right around Little Cayman Brac. I did try to go swim UW through the channel, but found that...

What is the real difference in certification levels

With some of those old OW classes also including Deco training, and even Harassment sessions too. Which really brings us back to examining what the real question here is: Is the basis of the underlying question really rooted in a concern over the training not really being 'robust' enough...

The torpedo lodged on Bloody Bay Wall off Little Cayman

I asked about this one today ... and I think I got it sorted out. There's no torpedoes ... but up in Jackson's around "Paul's Anchor", there are some old cannons. I've been promised a copy of an old dive site DM's map to where they are, but I was warned by my contact that over ten years ago...
