    Life expectancy of dive computers?

I still use my SkinnyDipper, and have never had a problem with this one*. Honestly have no idea when I bought it. Just that I was much, much younger. * - first two SkinnyDippers I received jammed during the initial scrolling. Orca replaced both at no cost. Third one worked; still does.

Non-Nikon strobe for Nikon J-1 housing?

Thanks, Giffenk. The digital strobes are a different world for me. I shot UW pix for a long time - with a Nikonos V, 15mm lens and an Ikelite 150, until they became virtually obsolete. Now I'm getting back in, as much as I can afford.

Non-Nikon strobe for Nikon J-1 housing?

Hi, folks. Question: Is there an UW strobe - Ikelite, whatever - that can be used with a Nikon 1 housing (WP-N1) for the Nikon J1? Photos, not video. I'm assembling an UW digital package of a J1 with the Nikon-specific housing. But the strobe unit costs around $750. Since I got the camera and...

Florida Atty Gen.: Miami guy sells fake course, PADI cards

Wow. Don't think I've ever heard of something his egregious in diving. And I'm not young. Wonder how he thought it would last? A link to the full complaint is below; it's worth a read for grim details. Yikes. A "certification" with two or three dives? Release Feb 3, 2015: Attorney General...

    Quarry fatality - Tavernier Florida

Agreed. When there are so many cool places to dive in the Keys... But the initial reports make it sound like these folks had some previous knowledge of the quarry. Heck, how else would they know it's there? I know people come down hankering to jump in for a shore dive, and there just isn't...

    Quarry fatality - Tavernier Florida

If it's the quarry that I assume it is (not the Burton Drive one), it's 3 tenths of a mile south of the Bird Center, but on the oceanside, amidst a stretch of green. Pretty close to Dove Creek and Dove Sound (but apparently no channel linking them).

    Quarry fatality - Tavernier Florida

I live within walking distance (if I wasn't lazy) of that mm 93.4 quarry, and I have no desire to get wet there at all. Drove by there Sunday around 2 p.m. and saw a car parked at the entrance. Says I to my sweetie, "What do people do back there?" Four hours later, the car was still there...

Father and son run over by dive charter

Interesting point, and one that a) I'm sure will come up in the inevitable lawsuit; and b) will receive comment from SB posters with pro experience. What we don't know: How many people were aboard as passengers. There may be some kind of passenger-to-crew ratio involved there. There is a...

Father and son run over by dive charter

See reference drift dive" Post 18, this thread. FWC = Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the investigating agency. Good 'nuff? Combined with the fact that this has been going on for a week now, and no one has contested the statement here or anywhere else that it was a drift dive.

Father and son run over by dive charter

Couple quick points: - Interesting maybe only to me: I've been out with a lot of Keys operators over the last near-four decades (first Pennekamp dive, Nov. 1972). Number of drift dives I've done in the Keys: 0. Kind of surprised to hear anyone's doing them here. I've advocated with some...

Father and son run over by dive charter

FWC report summary, verbatim. Boldface mine. Not saying its 100 percent accurate; saying its what the FWC says in its initial report: On 080911 at approximately 0910 hours a commercial dive charter vessel was operating a drift dive approximatley one mile north of Conch reef. Two divers...
