    Dr Paul on the mend

"A DOCTOR who almost died in a freak diving accident has spoken of his joy to be alive. Dr Paul Thomas was not expected to recover from the near-drowning incident at a Leicestershire quarry last month. The 50-year-old GP from Claydon, near Ipswich, was without oxygen for around 10...

    Trip report on Gran Canaria

I didn't take the photo but was there when it was taken - like I said, I am not the best at identifying fish so I am relying on someone else's word that its a shark - could be anything for all I know! Cheers

    Trip report on Gran Canaria

No - dived in a 7mm semi dry with a seperate hood and was very comfortable. Dived last year in a 5mm wetsuit and was also ok but got cold near the end of the dives. Regards

    Trip report on Gran Canaria

Ok - now for the report. This was my second diving trip to Gran Canaria and the second diving with Scubasur on the south of the island. The idea was to dive twice a day for 5 days and to catch a bit of sun in between. Sunday Morning: Dive site : Anfi Reef Max depth : 22m I'd not...

    SMB use

I don't use my BCD at all but use my dry suit for buoyancy. It has an auto dump so as I reel in the line and start ascending, the auto dump does just that, leaving my hands free for reeling in the line. Regards

    New Suunto

My LDS is already taking orders and expects the first models to arrive mid April. I already dive with the Stinger and absolutely love it but I am really interested in this new model because of the capability to switch between the 3 nitrox mixes. I usually dive with nitrox and carry a side slung...

    Getting narced.

I guess we actually agree, although we appear to be saying different things. I too dive deeper to experience the enhanced effects of narcosis so that I can become acclimatised to it - I realise that I am still suffering the exact same effects as always, its just that I am able to recognise it...

    Diving in UK?

We've got (IMO) some of the best cold water diving in the world. As mentioned before, we have an entire coastline littered with diveable wrecks, we have cold water reefs, deep dives, shallow dives. Hell, we occasionally get some sunshine too!! Welcome to the UK Boz - I've sent you a PM giving...

    Getting narced.

This is a common misconception. You will still be subject to the same levels of narcosis but your brain will be used to the effects while under the same conditions A good analogy is alchohol - when you first start drinking, your tolerance (i.e. mental) is low - you drink for a while and you...

Bit the bullet--PADI DM it is.

But, this works for me: Take a full lung full of air, lie back & relax, You should be floating on the surface (although your legs may be submerged). When you need another breath, breathe out quickly, grab another lung full and relax again. Not the most elegant of methods but you should be...

    Getting narced.

All of my winter dives are constrained to inland fresh water sites and I am getting narced more often than not at the minute. Until last weekend it always hit at about 30-35 metres - suddenly everything went eerily silent and all I could hear were my bubbles as if they were fighting their way...

Bit the bullet--PADI DM it is.

400 metre timed swim 800 metre mask, fins, snorkel 15 mins float / tread water with last two minutes hands out of water 100 metre 'tired diver' tow. Not sure about instructor but I believe in a lot of cases the course director tells you to start and not stop till he says so!! Regards Jay

Bit the bullet--PADI DM it is.

I officially started my DM course this evening and got the worst bit out of the way - the SWIM TESTS! I am not a strong swimmer but what helped me was having 5 other DMCs in the pool at the same time. Before I knew it, it was all over and I was dead chuffed! Long haul starts from here but I...

    I have done it

Hope all goes well for you. I dive a lot in Gran Canaria and the diving is spectacular so I hope everything works out.

Who does NOT log their dives?

Got to admit it - I only log dives for DAN should they ever need it - I hate filling in the pages etc (my Stinger provides all relevant info for me) - gues it depends on whether you're anally retentive or not (and NO, please don't mention the Warhammer Manouevre again!) Also, as I'm starting...

    Pony?

Until recently I dived with a 15l single and no pony but, as I dive in UK waters (i.e. cold) and have had a 1st stage freeflow at 30m on the above kit, I decided that a bit of redundancy was in order. I don't dive using a standard 3l pony setup but prefer to dive with my single 15l and a side...
