I'm using a ss plate with oxycheq mach v and don't use a sta mainly because it's to much weight in freshwater for me. I could see how one would be handy especially if you are switching between duals and singles alot.
I'm in the same boat you are. I think apeks are the way to go just not sure where to go for good deals from authorized dealers.
My current regs have been giving me problems every few dives and i'm tired of messing with them.
