    Which cenotes for training? GoPro?

You won't need a GoPro. There will be video of you doing your skills, and you'll be analyzing your video on the debrief. Bring a USB drive and ask Kim for your video at the end of your course. You might not be able to use your helmet at the start. It makes it easier to put your blindfold on...

    Advice for Training and Gear

tbone, we had a discussion with Steve when he first designed the Razor. He went over his philosophy of why it was designed the way it was. He also showed some designs that he rejected, one having baffles, and why he rejected it. You can interpret it however you want, but my info is from the...

    Advice for Training and Gear

I only bring up the redundant buoyancy because it may be a requirement or standard in your tec course. The Razor was actually designed without baffles specifically. It was done this way to put the lift further down towards the waist. For many people, the center of gravity shifts down...

    Advice for Training and Gear

I'm also not a fan of the Hollis sidemount rigs, having owned a few of them. I want to love them, since they are really easy to get, but their designs are always playing catch up to the originals. Even the Katana is an attempt to cut into the Razor/Stealth market. I've got no issues with...

    Advice for Training and Gear

You can get cheap knock offs of anything these days, but there is something to be said for the original. The Razor is a exploration grade, built in the USA rig. It's a rugged rig that's stood the test of time. It's also a rig that the op can grow with, as he progresses into the courses that...

    Advice for Training and Gear

From the sounds of what you're looking for, you're going to be better served going to Mexico and taking a course from one of the more reputable instructors. You can take an intense course during the day and be relaxing on a beach in the evening. Florida cave country is going to lack some of...

    Sidemount Harness Choice/Advice

As mentioned, it is definitely flimsier. I'm not sure if it has changed much over the years, but we had a couple when they first came out. We had an issue with the nuts and bolts tearing through the webbing (which could have been solved by adding washers). Not the best for adding d-rings to...

    Going Deep! (video)

Pretty proud of a couple of my former students, so I thought I'd share their video. It's very well done! Connie was trained in backmount and sidemount, but chose to use her Stealth on her Extended Range course. With all of the arguing that we see over the internet nowadays (I'm as guilty as...

Help planning a refresher with Under the Jungle

Happy New Year! I sent you what I think is a PM with some more hints. Not sure how everything works for that now.

Help planning a refresher with Under the Jungle

You're going to have so much fun! As mentioned, it shouldn't be too hot, but drink lots of water. We'd freeze a couple of bottles and they'd be thawed out by lunch. Depending what you're wearing for exposure protection, you might enjoy that it's hotter. Typically courses down there spend a...

    Advantages of sidemount for exploration

I think half of the fun was dragging all of the gear up there! My computer showed 3 degrees celsius.

    XDEEP Stealth REC VS TEC

Well, seeing as the OP list 0-24 dives, I hope that he is not going through restrictions or overhead environments requiring removal of tanks. And I hope that you are not advocating it Andy! Saying that, I prefer my classic for exploration and going through restrictions. If I need to (and I...

    XDEEP Stealth REC VS TEC

Hi Chad, I have the classic and the Tec. I prefer the classic. There's no difference in mobility between the classic and Tec. I've used both for exploration and have not had issues with either. I wouldn't look at the Apeks as it's not as robust in it's attachment points for cold water...

    Advantages of sidemount for exploration

I don't think that there was any way to do this other than sidemount. There's no way I was going to haul twins up there. We hauled up lp85s, al80's and an 80 stage. Stealth Classics is the way to go! Darryl put in a lot of work hauling tanks and camera gear up this mountain to film this...

    Deco Bottle Mounting

Pretty sure that there isn't an issue using a standard stage kit for sidemount. It's so easy that you could do it blindfolded! Keep in mind, that the boys in Mexico are using this technique for real sidemount diving and real exploration. They each have their variations. But the tanks ride tight.

Favorite Helmet Mounted Lights And Why?

Hi Mike, The Hollis Mini 3s are pretty good and available locally since the Canadian distributor is here in Calgary. They use readily available AAA batteries that you can find anywhere in the world for cheap. They're well built as I've banged mine around a lot and they still keep working...
