    TSandM -- Lynne Flaherty

My thoughts go out to Peter and Lynne. My heart in my stomach - tears in my eyes. Hoping against hope. Lynne was one of the kindest and most generous people I know. Generous with her friendship, her time and her knowledge and experience. Always ready with a kind word, encouragement and help if...

The most ridiculously overstaffed Fundies class ever taught . . .

What an absolutely wonderful story, and great write-ups. Thank you to everyone involved. What fun :)

    Which Torque Wrench

One thing to keep in mind is the indicated accuracy of a torque wrench. It is usually given as a percentage, and from vague recollection it is a percentage of the torque number you are aiming for. Important for smaller fittings and fasteners made from softer metals. Also, most wrenches are most...

    ZS40/TZ60 just announced at CES!

I saw that announcement on DP Review as well. Sure, *now* they add RAW :) and the slo-mo HD video is a nice added bonus. Panasonic are really on the forefront wrt. incorporating video in their cameras.

GUE Fundies Report - Rec 1 thoughts coming soon.

Very nice class report. Thanks for sharing. Sounds like you learned a lot *and* had a good time. Always a good combination :)

    Dry Suit P-Valve Question

The balanced Halcyon P-valve should not leak - open or closed. There are a few things that can make that happen though: - the duckbill valve that "balances" the valve can deform over time - especially if it is left to soak. I.e. if you close the valve with fluid still in it. That deformation...

GUE Fundies Class report... Day 3 and 4 delayed

I heard that it was some of the worst viz this weekend - I believe ~10' in the first 100'. Usually it's 20-30' and up.

GUE Fundies Class report... Day 3 and 4 delayed

You'll like Rock Lake much better :) Granted, viz last weekend was pretty bad, but generally it's good there, and best in the winter. And the water is a "balmy" 65° year round ;) Good luck with the practice and second round of class.

GUE Fundies class report, days 1 and 2

wrt. trim: I can't exactly explain the mechanics of it, but if you don't keep your head back and your hands/arms up, you will slip out of trim. OTOH if you keep your head back, hands & arms up it will help bring your into or closer to flat trim. As I was taught, and what works for me, is that...

    Experience with Lumix DMC-ZS30 (TZ40)?

It certainly seems like a very capable camera, with enough options for adjustments to satisfy my need for manual control and desire to tinker. So I'm sure it'll only get better. And you know - satisfaction is all about managing expectations ;)

    Experience with Lumix DMC-ZS30 (TZ40)?

I guess my opinion has changed because I've re-evaluated what I will be using the camera for the most. And that is Video using Wifi for some self-coaching as well as a capable pocket camera for hiking and travel. I'm into traditional archery, and I use the video a lot for self-evaluation, as...

    Can Light compass KRoss Mount

If my LED can light head is near my compass, I can see a ~20° deviation in compass reading between "light on" and "light off". Just something to keep in mind and test out.

    Experience with Lumix DMC-ZS30 (TZ40)?

Finally got home and have had a few days to play with the camera: - unboxing: uneventful, and everything as expected. The camera at first felt light making me worry about "flimsyness", but the metal case is solid with no flex or "creaks", lens feels solid as well, so all is good there. - the...

    Gear acquisition in stages

I don't but it wouldn't hurt I guess. I sometimes breathe off of my back-up for a minute or so on a dive. Just a quick check to make sure everything "feels right". I do that for a short enough time that I keep my primary in my right hand - ready to donate. I also let my team know that it will...

    Gear acquisition in stages

I'm with PfcAJ: BP/W first, then regs for similar reasons. I can say that for me, the BP/W made a big difference in how I enjoyed my dives as far as comfort in the water. For the regs, make sure you get regs that will keep up with the diving you intend to be doing down the line. Also make sure...

UTD Z-side mount with isolatable manifold

I can't vouch for what other people say/write, but as I was trained you donate the reg you're breathing. It expedites donation and prevents donating a "non-breatheable" gas. For the majority of my dive time that would mean donating the long hose. On deco - yep ;) I'd donate the deco reg. As for...

UTD Z-side mount with isolatable manifold

I believe you would always donate what you are breathing, so if on a deco bottle, you would donate the deco reg from your mouth. The donor would go onto back gas via necklace back-up reg.
