    Dive reports with beach/weather conditions

Beach/kayak diving on this coast is pretty much a waste of time for the foreseeable future. Time to hit the springs, Lake Denton or the Keys!

    Active use?

I see that the last post on this forum is more than 6 months old. Is the Engelwood Dive Club still actively using this forum to communicate club activities? If so, lets put some updated activities (meetings, trips parties) on it. Mike M.

    Dive reports with beach/weather conditions

First of all, I am the section administrator. Secondly, there isn't anything to debate, unless you have proven scientific facts and documentation to back it up. Lastly, I wasn't trying to start a debate. I was trying to educate an otherwise intelligent person about scientific facts so they...

    Dive reports with beach/weather conditions

As a side note: I keep in touch with several fellow marine scientist and keep up with the scientific journals and have not read anything published in any of them that in any way establishes runoff as being a factor in causing a red tide bloom or contributing to it's growth.

    Dive reports with beach/weather conditions

Gryan, I worked as a research biologist with Mote Marine lab, doing research and monitoring Karinia brevis on the west coast of Florida. These are the scientific facts: Red tide was reported by Hernando Desoto in the 16th century while exploring the west coast of Florida, so fertilizer runoff is...

    Dive reports with beach/weather conditions

Lake O and the Hoover dike have nothing to do with red tide (Karinia brevis). Red tide is caused by a phytoplankton while the discharge from Lake O is a blue green algae caused by excessive fertilizer runoff into Lake O. One has nothing to do with the other.

    Dive reports with beach/weather conditions

Aquacat, just a friendly piece of advice on diving Venice: You'll find the viz to be it's best with easterly winds and incoming tides. Onshore winds and outgoing tides tend to degrade the visibility and the closer to the Jetties, the worse it gets!

    Dive reports with beach/weather conditions

#1 dive buddy and I went to both South Brohard and Venice public beach yesterday with the idea of diving. There are Red Tide warnings at both beaches, dead fish at both beaches and respiratory and throat irritation caused coughing when we got within 50 ft of the water.
