Currently seems like each evening has torrential/heavy rains, more rain in average per day compared to Samui, where it's monsoon time. Drove from Khao Lak to Phuket yesterday in pouring rain and once on Phuket there was thunder and lights! During the morning and day it's actually nice at the moment.

Stevenl, I don't know where you get your information from, but there are plenty of dive centers based in Khao Lak that own their boats and depart from Khao Lak and visit the Similan islands and/or Richelieu directly. These dc's definitely will not transfer their customers to Phuket for the dives...

Alternatively, see if you can get a trip to Sail Rock, in my opinion an even better site compared to Chumphon Pinnacle. Sail Rock is further away though and this would be a full day trip from Koh Tao.

Stay in Mae Haad, no need to stray much further away, all you need is there, the ferries, dive centers, plenty of restaurants, accommodation, all within walking distance.

Koh Tao is the best option, just look for dive centers that will make the trip the next day. This time of the year should be no problem visiting the site, weather conditions should be near perfect. Chumphon Pinnacle is very close to Koh Tao, maybe 20 minutes max, and really far away from...
