Hello, new member resuming scuba diving after a long absence

Welcome to the ranks of the BADs - Born Again Divers. There are a lot of us around here. You've come to the right place. For me the biggest change between my first cert (1978) and re-cert (2004) was all the new tech. Dive computers that actually work! BCDs instead of AT-PACs or horse collars...

too good to be true- OMS SS Backplate w/ Comfort Harness OMS SS System II < $200

Thanks for the info - I went back and re-checked the math - so I can get the full-up DGX with a steel plate for 499, so I think I see what you're getting at. Side note - I have limited mobility in one of my shoulders, so that's what was making the comfort harness attractive. I think I need to...

too good to be true- OMS SS Backplate w/ Comfort Harness OMS SS System II < $200

I've been researching backplate options the past few weeks, and looking at the usual sites to get an idea of what kind of investment I'd be looking at. DGX, Hollis, Dive Rite, etc - it looks like I'd be look at ar least $600 or so. But I always check my LDS, because I want to suppor them. And...

Bring Brand New Gear on Vacation?

Huh. I had forgotten about those. I just moved from a house with a full double garage to hold/clean/dry the gear to a townhouse with practically zero space. It takes forever and a day for a wetsuit to dry in a bathroom compared to a warm (not hot) garage. I gotta go shopping...

    Returning after 30 years!

Welcome back! I did the exact same thing with my kid - re-certed with the kid in 2007. I've dove more since then, then I did the first time around. And man, did gear and practices change a lot. I'm glad I started over.

    Covid and diving study?

I seem to recall that UCSD Med and Scripps Oceanography were doing or planning to do a long-term study on covid and diving. Well, I'm a diver and I just recovered from covid. So I sure wouldn't minding signing up, if I can find it. Anyone remember seeing this late last year? Google finds...

    Invasion vs. Surge?

What's the difference between a ScubaBoard Invasion and a ScubaBoard Surge? I plan to do the Caribbean next year, and saw both invasions and surges listed for prior years.

how have "jet" fins evolved since the 80s?

Digging through the garage a few months ago, and came across my original 1980s (actually 1978 and 1980, I think) "jet fins". One pair from US Divers and one from Sub-Aquatic Systems. Man, they look small. The foot pockets look tiny. The US Divers are only 18" tip to pocket edge, the SAS are...

New (tech) Black Sea wreck dive site to open in 2023!

There are conflicting reports that it may or may not have had two warheads. For those dives, what does the graph look like? I'm trying to explain to non-divers how this is a pretty regular profile. Thanks - I learn something every time I come to SB.

New (tech) Black Sea wreck dive site to open in 2023!

There's a brand new wreck in the Black Sea that could open in 2023! 45°10'43.39″N, 30°55'30.54″E Depth is supposedly around 190 ft. Not being a tech diver, just for grins, could someone help me "plan" a "generic" tech dive for this site? Figure 200 ft for 30 minutes - how would you plan it...

    Diving watches

I'm wondering how your friend lost a watch in Lake Poway - must have been fishing, not diving? (Hello fellow Powegian!) My rule is never own a watch that costs more than a vacation, or specifically - a week of boat dives in Hawaii! If I can't wear it, why do I own it? If I can't dive it, why...

    Diving watches

It's the perfect example of a "tool watch" - I've got one of the older ones I don't dive it because I've got other, better (and probably too many?) dive watches, but I keep it around as a loaner, or just if I'm feeling "classic" :-) I bet the design hasn't changed much since the first version...

no need to remove SWIFT transmitter battery?

Thanks - I gotta go buy some Lithium batteries for the computer. I should likely pick up some spares for the transmitter for the save a dive kit.

no need to remove SWIFT transmitter battery?

I just got my Perdix AI on Friday - it should get its first dives next week. I'm the guy that reads all the manuals cover to cover and... why is there a recommendation to remove the battery from the computer if it won't be used for a while, but no similar recommendation for the transmitter?

Bald and hoods - need extra insulation?

Thanks! I hope to actually get in the water this weekend. I've been out so long my grills have dried out.

Bald and hoods - need extra insulation?

I recently took the plunge and shaved my head. I did have thick hair before, just not everywhere up there. So there was plenty of hair to prevent water sloshing around under the hood. I'm trying to figure our what, if anything I need to do to stay warm. Cold-ish water diving - Southern...

    BCD Handle?

If the backboard is thick and sturdy enough... If there aren't already any holes, perhaps drill two holes at the top corners, and run in some heavy line between them to make a handle? Maybe some 3/4 "dock line" - Dock Lines That would definitely carry the weight and be thick enough to make a...
