Titanic tourist sub goes missing sparking search

I hear you loud and clear. As I said, it requires work and willingness to engage in the process of learning, on both sides. And of course, I fully acknowledge that many reporters, particularly in TV News, who are underpaid and understaffed, don't always live up to the task, and yet others are...

Titanic tourist sub goes missing sparking search

As a science writer who does ^^this^^ for a living, I must state that your assessment is broadly stereotyping and sounds - let's just say, a bit "dramatic." You see, I work as a liaison between scientists and journalists, and I can tell you from experience that yes, sometimes journalists get...

Ginnie Springs for a non-caver from out of state?

Hi all, I'll be in Gainesville Nov. 1-5 for a conference and just realized it's really close to Ginnie Springs. I'm not a cave diver but interested in what the springs have to offer for a "regular" sport diver. Would it be worth for me to spend an extra two days at the springs and maybe try to...

Does water in a wetsuit help or hurt. A myth to be BUSTED or CONFIRMED

There is nothing to debate. A wetsuit would keep you even warmer if there was no water between the skin and the suit. Why? Because water conducts heat much more easily and faster than air. How do I know? Just compare a wetsuit to a semi-dry and you'll know. ;-)

Unclaimed SDI OW slates - PM me if you want them

Hi all, In case anyone is interested in a set of SDI OW instructor slates, send me a PM. I found them, posted a thread under the regional forum, and nobody claimed them. They're a little scratched up but in perfectly usable condition. I'll give them away if you send me a SASE.

    Glide Harness Adapter

I love my DSS harnesses and wings and recommend them to every diver I meet. And when the glide adaptor came out, I thought, "Wow, another fantastic idea from DSS!" I totally want one. But $40??? Seriously? I mean, it doesn't look all too different from a $2 webbing keeper with one of the side...

    Slates found at Lake Pleasant

Found a set of instructor slates at Desert Tortoise on April 20. They're SDI slates with many pencil notes scribbled on them, held together by a blue carabiner. If they're yours, call me at 520-954-1964. Please don't PM me as I almost never check my scubaboard messages. Daniel

    SP Mk2 DIN Conversion

Hi all, I recently got a ScubaPro Mk2 reg and a DIN conversion kit. The conversion kit came with two torque specs on the box but didn't specify which is for which. I'm assuming the smaller number is for the nut holding the crud filter in place? More importantly, it came with a plastic washer...

Out-of-the-box ScubaPro reg for 50% Nitrox?

Thank you for your feedback! The simplicity of this reg is why I thought it might be a good choice for an EAN deco reg. But this still doesn't answer my question of whether I should have it O2-cleaned before using it on 50% or whether it's safe to use it out of the box for that?

Out-of-the-box ScubaPro reg for 50% Nitrox?

    I'm sorry, guys, my bad. It's not an Mk5, it's an Mk2. Brandnew. I apologize for the confusion. From a physical point of view, I can't imagine a reg being good for 40% O2 but not 50%. Here is why: With 40%, the pO2 at 3,000 PSI = 1,200 With 50%, the pO2 at 3,000 PSI = 1,500 If I dive 40% in a...

Um, yes? And what does that mean with regard to 50%?

Out-of-the-box ScubaPro reg for 50% Nitrox?

Hi all, I'd like to use a ScubaPro Mk5 out of the box for 50% deco mix. I know they come up to 40% out of the box and I'm not looking for answers the manufacturer or a shop would give me. I want to know if I really (as in, REALLY) need to O2-clean this reg. 40 vs. 50% sounds like it shouldn't...

Dive operator: "We won't let you ..."

Even then there is no scuba police. I'm a Divemaster, but do I see myself as scuba police? Heck no. People are responsible for diving within their ability and experience.

    Potential problems with Divemaster class

Get out, fast and furious! To me, the not being told where you stand part is a Red Flag. I speak from experience.

Cert. cards can't be revoked for cause?

I don't see the point. Apart from the fact that we'd be opening a can of worms (In the eyes of a freshly certified noob, I'd probably deserve my cert revoked because I dive solo), what difference does it make? If someone is a sucky diver, why would and should I care? I select my buddies based on...

Can dive shallow water using a Military compass?

One of my friends is an extremely frugal diver and has used a $10 run-of-the-mill hiking compass as a diving compass for years, with no problems. Personally, I wouldn't take the risk because I don't mind spending 50 bucks on a proper piece of equipment that could potentially save my life, but it...

Hey, Lake Pleasant Vista Point Divers and Instructors!!!

This whole discussion is beside the point. The point is that if a diver comes across gas supplies tied off under water, leave 'em alone. Period. The purpose, protocol, intent of the dive and whether or not there is anything "worthwhile" to see is nobody's business except the diver who put those...
