    "Solo Diving" Books, good ones?

Jim and Andy, Thanks for your frank and honest answers. I appreciate the different perspective on diving.

    "Solo Diving" Books, good ones?

I wasn't sure what you were getting at with a team of 4, so that is why I asked. Yes, a team of 4 is like herding cats and the best way to deal with that is two teams of two. Funny you mentioned the additional brains thing. That was one of the questions I asked in my questions to Jim above...

    "Solo Diving" Books, good ones?

No need to request that I lighten up, I don't mean to sound anything but. I am not a member of the scuba police and I am genuinely interested in the perspective of others. I didn't think I was being that heavy handed, however I guess I just thought it was more than even mildly ironic that you...

    "Solo Diving" Books, good ones?

Which of your equipment principles mentioned above are a DIR thing? I thought that all the things you mentioned were just "diver" things and not specifically DIR. You don't need to be an adherent of DIR to view streamlining, no unnecessary items, trim, buoyancy, and propulsion as important to...

    "Solo Diving" Books, good ones?

How do you apply the "team concept" (sic) to a team of one? I am also curious as to how you see a team of 4 operating.

    "Solo Diving" Books, good ones?

"Dressed For Success" was written by Dan MacKay, not JJ, and there is something mildly ironic about recommending his book for solo diving...... considering one of the motivating factors for adopting this configuration is being able to donate gas to a team mate in any situation.....

UTD and GUE protocol and procedural differences

Kind of like making up your mind to firmly plant one foot on each side of the fence.......does seem strange. Maybe don't believe in the notion of 02 window but a bit afraid of the pressure gradient........;-)

"advanced formulas for new divers"...............you have got to be kidding me. And from your post you still don't understand what "Mininimum Gas" or "Rock Bottom" is.

How to wear weight belt in DIR setup ?

Your in Italy, so diving in the Med right? About 75-80 degrees F? Try a 3mm suit, 6lb stainless steel BP and your eclipse and no additional weight. Unless you have a ton of "bioprene" you probably will not need any extra weight with an Al 80. Trust me and try it. You are only going to be...

    Hexagon Grouper?

You will see more groupers around Little Cayman and Cayman Brac than anywhere else in the Caribbean. A hexagon grouper is very, very pretty but I have only seen them in the Pacific. Sometimes mother nature can create colour schemes that simply defy imagination. It can be very humbling...

    First Deco Bottle

Agree with Richard on this one. My guess is after you complete a GUE course you will most likely want to continue in that line. I would suggest saving some of your hard earned money and apply it to your GUE Tech I when you feel you are ready and comfortable to do so. You also get trimix training...

    3 Bottle dives

IMO, if you think you are going to fumble the stage switch, practice some more until you don't think you are going to do this....... As for the 130's versus smaller tanks and stages, we are really only talking one stage here and at worst, for these kind of dives this is maybe 4 lbs with 15/55...

    3 Bottle dives

Rich, is this one of the dives we are looking at up here? No need for the 120 deco gas. I would be (am) taking an al 80 for 50%, not enought margin for error with an AL 40. Also a 40 for 02 but boosted to 3k (Not enough margin with the 2200 psi fill from a T bottle transfill). Lots of gas...

    al80's and redundant buoyancy

double al 80's, ss plate, 3mm suit, no weight. It's a sweet set of gear.

Exactly my point and why I took the time to be so long winded.

    Let's talk about balanced rigs

I know that this thread started out with some less than 200' tech dive questions, however, the principles are essentially the same. If we can work out and understand how a fully bombed out tech diver can accomplish this, then it becomes easier to understand it on a more simple gear...

    Let's talk about balanced rigs

Yep, Works for me. We do the same thing sometimes, especially if the environment makes it more likely we might have some issues. 6lb plate and a 6lb belt. We normally do the 200' stuff with AL 40 also, unless we just need more gas. I watched someone hand a AL 80 stage with reg to the RIB dude in...

    Let's talk about balanced rigs

Ditto. Even worse in a dive where you have upwards of 30 minutes of 02 deco left......... Hope your boat has DAN on Speed dial.

    Let's talk about balanced rigs

Gentlemen, In the light of information exchange and trying to clarify the situation a bit, I offer the following for your consideration. Jeff and Doc, if you disagree with some of the numbers in my math or any of the starting assumptions, please correct me in this particular area. I realize...
