Close to 100% nitrogen in an old tank?

I wonder if the dive shop mistook the tank for an inflation bottle and it was filled with argon instead of air? Then maybe the coroner only checked the O2% and did not verify what was the inert fraction? I've had tanks sit a full hydro cycle untouched and were still breathable (not advisable)...

    PO2 Max - Why 1.4/1.6?

Historically, I believe it was the US Navy that originally came up with the limits, but I'm sure there was other research going on throughout the world. If you can find an old US Navy Dive Manual or look through some history books you can find more of the background. If I recall the US Navy...

    PO2 Max - Why 1.4/1.6?

I unfortunately know two people that passed away cave diving at 1.4 PPO2 on separate occasions. Not sure if it's just individual sensitivity to PPO2, or combination of physiological factors such as fatigue, dehydration, or environmental factors such cold, stress, etc that can vary from day to...

    Dive Xtras Sierra DPV Battery

Spare Dive Xtras Sierra 310Wh NiMH DPV Scooter battery (24v, 13Ah). This was new/rebuilt from Rabbit Tools in March 2017 (1 yr old) - $500. I also have an empty battery housing I would consider selling for $100. Stock photo:

    DCS--Playing the Odds

@KenGordon - I think what boulderjohn is proposing is that we do have some control over what group we are in if we take better care of ourselves. Although, there are still some other physiological factors like PFO (paten foramen ovale) that will predispose certain individuals to a higher risk...

    DCS--Playing the Odds

The other scenario is they don't take care of themselves, run aggressive profiles and are at a higher risk for DCS.

    DCS--Playing the Odds

For starters be fit, hydrated, avoid fatigue and follow conservative profiles and decompression. Minimize physical injures and calcium buildups. I think the statements being made are more about physiology and fitness level than actual in water experience. In other words, a fit diver is probably...

Hollis future support for Prism 2?

The MK5 and 5P are essentially the same thing. Big yellow cover, hydrophobic scrubber, gas block, etc. They have nothing to do with the MK VI. Below is a pic with the "MK 5" emblem on it.

Hollis future support for Prism 2?

These are not correct statements. I was an active diver at the time and the Cis-Lunar units were almost mythical. The MK5 was 100% Cis-Lunar and it ended in 2000 with limited production sold. After that the rebreather side of Cis-Lunar shut down until Poseidon got involved in 2005 and developed...

Hollis future support for Prism 2?

Who's "they", and can you be so kind as to point me to a link or a public announcement? Joint venture implies shared ownership and I don't think this is the case.

Hollis future support for Prism 2?

Are you sure it's a Joint Venture, and not just a partnership where the Shearwater products are able to work with the ISCAN system? Possibly some IP is shared, but that is all. Then the Shearwater products are also sold directly through ISC too.

Hollis future support for Prism 2?

How I understand it is that ISC owns the primary handset/controller (Apeks 4), and HUD. There is an option where the secondary can be a Shearwater Petrel ISCAN2 or Nerd (HUD + Secondary).

Nitrox training worth it w/o a computer

IMHO - take the class for the "knowledge" and it will be worth it. It could easily be argued that taking it without a computer will force you to be more knowledgeable, and understand the science better. Hand calculate your equivalent air depths, partial pressures and MOD's. Then switching to a...

Slow & steady little compressor- curious and/or seeking

You can get steel storage bank bottles that are rated for 4500-6000psi. With that amount of diving a 5cfm or larger compressor would serve you better. Having said that, a Bauer Varius compressor is a nice small 2cfm compressor that could probably run on a 110v motor. It will take about 40...

Slow & steady little compressor- curious and/or seeking

It would need to have auto drains and a cutoff switch to run it that way which would add cost. I have a Bauer 5 cfm Capitano setup with a 3hp 220V single phase motor. Runs off a 30 amp circuit, but has manual drains. If I had to do it again I would look for a quiet K14 with auto drains and then...

    Booster: Drive gas quality.

Goes back to the size and spec of the booster. The small ones might be able to get away with an oil-less compressor. Rather than just generically saying "booster", which could include things like the Haskel Mini Sport or KISS Baby booster, it would be good to know which model is being...

    Booster: Drive gas quality.

Depends on the type of booster. Some of the smaller ones aren't completely separated, so the LP gas is exposed to the bottom of the HP cylinder at the top of the stroke. It's also just good shop hygiene not to have oil around whips and fittings that are boosting HP O2. Easier to keep those...
