    Doc Deep dies during dive.

As a St Croix diver and member of the local dive community, I am shocked at this story, posted today on a local news site. Especially the last paragraph, which is an anonymous quote. Garman Family Attorney to DPNR: 'You Can Keep The Body, We Just Want The Gear' - Virgin Islands Free Press...

    Jolie Ann Johnson

Thanks Kathy. I received several private messages from the sister in a similar vein. We may never know exactly what happened. Sad, so sad.

    Jolie Ann Johnson

That's what we're trying to figure out. The Bonaire authorities are investigating, and say only that she "became unconscious while diving" according the reporter in Medford.

    Jolie Ann Johnson

Thanks, Kathy. I have read that article and am in contact with the reporter, who has asked me to inquire on ScubaBoard seeking details.

    Jolie Ann Johnson

Anyone have information on a recent diver death at Bonaire? A well-known local (Medford, OR) woman, Jolie Ann Johnson, died in an apparent scuba accident sometime in early February. Local reports are sketchy. This woman was a well-known community leader, with many friends and admirers, and I...

    Orthotic booties and/or fins?

Thanks to everyone. I will look into Force fins. Hard sole boots might cure 1/2 of the issue — but I already have plastic plates which I wear inside my booties, making them as rigid as hard sole boots on the downstroke. It's the upstroke that aggravates the joint.

    Orthotic booties and/or fins?

I have big toe joint problems in both feet. The torque on the joints produced by kicking with fins puts a lot of strain on them, causing pain, inflammation and rigidity. For a few years, regular cortisone shots have helped, but that's a short-term solution at best, and the cumulative effect of...

What do Safe Divers do that Unsafe Divers don't?

I have a funny set-up too, and I usually have to explain it to the crew. I always check carefully before strapping up, and that includes something I've not seen a crew member do: check for a good seal at the O-ring. They usually turn on the air, take a quick look at the reg, gauge, power...

    Inconsistent message to new divers

After about 25 dives, in varied locations and circumstances, I began to feel knowledgeable enough to ask intelligent questions of the DM. I always approached it as if I had not heard or understood exactly what he/she had said, and always with respect, even if I thought the DM was wrong. On...

What do Safe Divers do that Unsafe Divers don't?

Kunk35: "Bragging rights," indeed. A friend of mine who trained, was certified and dives in Japan noted that the typical Japanese diver thinks he's in competition with other divers, particularly if there are gaijin (Americans, Aussies) in the group. He told me several anecdotes to illustrate...

What do Safe Divers do that Unsafe Divers don't?

I guess the "tunnel vision" entry would cover two things I've noticed: One, being unaware of other divers around, above, below you (leading to collisions, crowding); and two, losing sight/contact with your dive buddy. My wife and I dive together and have evolved the habit of doing a 360° "Crazy...

Article: Loving and Loathing the Lionfish

Sharks are getting comfortable following lionfish hunters around here at St. Croix, where nearly every boat has at least one hunter, and the dive clubs kill dozens every outing. Eels apparently eat lionfish. If you can find a spotted or green moray, try serving up a speared lionfish, or even a...

    Cancun diving

We're going to Playa del Carmen for a quick trip in November, and want to get a dive or two in while we're there. We found Tank Ha dive shop, which operates directly out of Playa for Cozumel wall dives (our goal). It sounds ideal in terms of ground transportation . . . but then we found a...

    Just on Third Lesson....

I was always cold in the pool during training, and think it was because I spent a lot of time doing nothing while the instructor tended to other students or talked to us. I wore a 7 mil wetsuit and was still cold in 80-something water! Your instructor probably wants to teach you to achieve...

    Facial hair and Mask sealing

Hey everyone . . . thanks for the replies and advice. If I hadn't already invested in corrective lenses for my Tilos mask, I'd be shopping for a better mask, although I must say it is comfortable and a reasonable fit. Reminds me of buying my first ski gear — until I got better at the...

    Facial hair and Mask sealing

Thanks Don. I'll trim up a bit, maybe go for that Muddy Waters look, instead of the Burt Reynolds/Emilio Zapata thing . . . and I like the earlier poster's suggestion about chapstick instead of vaseline. Pretty sure that chapstick isn't a petrochemical . . . Rich Poorman

    Facial hair and Mask sealing

Exactly the problem: if it seals well, it can't be water soluble, and most stuff that is water soluble, doesn't seal. Perhaps some entrepreneurial DS people can concoct a product just for 'stached divers, and make a fortune! I wonder about vaseline deteriorating the mask skirt, though . . ...

    Hello from Rich Poorman

Thanks for the welcoming reply. Not sure where you are in Japan, but I have a very good American friend in Aomori who's an experienced diver, now DM-trained. We keep talking about getting a trip together. Perhaps you know Chris Fitzpatrick? Rich in Name Only
