    Certification in the 70s

Thanks, all. Just to clarify, I am wondering particularly about kids (under 15), whether they could be certified, or were diving without certs (I'm sure some were, if diving was in the family, say). When were the first Junior certs issued?

    Certification in the 70s

What kind of options were there to get certified in the 70s? Could kids get certified then? If not, when did that start? Were there many people diving without certs? Thanks for any answers.

Snorkeling during 12 hour layover in Sydney (6a-6p) May, 2010 - would it be worth it?

You could visit the aquarium at Darling Harbour. Or the one at Manly (catch a ferry across). You can snorkel around the swimming enclosure at Manly near the aquarium. There are seahorses there, but I don't know if you can see them from the surface.

    size of Oceanic Veo

Is the Veo the same size and shape as Oceanic's other computers, like the VT3 and Versa pro? I'm wondering if a mount for the VT3 will fit a Veo.

What to do with scary adult divers whose children are better trained?

I don't know if you will see this kid, but if you do, you could have a chat to him about safety. You are his instructor, so I think you have a right to talk to him about it. He is only a kid, but 12 is still old enough to take some responsibility and develop some common sense about his actions...

    What makes a diver DIR?

But you can't really discuss it on the internet, without getting flamed, or trolled. Me, a GUE diver? No, not a member. DIR diver? Yes, because I try to follow that system.

    Was I Narc'd?

Apparently this study was done by Tom Mount and Gilbert Milner in 1965. Anyone know anything more about it? I'd like to look it up. While I was looking for the 1965 study, I found one that looked at exactly this: they repeated dives over 5 dives, measuring 4 different factors on each dive...

    SAC rate

The 28 sounds like litres per minute, which would be equivalent to just under 1 cuft/minute. edit: oh, RA is from Nth Carolina, so probably not using litres, nvm.

    An Attempt at Understanding DIR

My take on that book, as a DIR diver who happily dives with non-DIR divers (which I think many DIR divers do), is that it is telling you what the DIR configuration is. If you want to dive DIR, follow it. If not, well, there are a whole bunch of other ways you can dive, some of which are...

Can you fail the Navigation adventure dive?

He tried to teach me, but I didn't understand. Is that his fault, that he shouldn't get paid for his effort? He wasn't the only person who tried to explain it to me, but I just couldn't get it (I do now).

Can you fail the Navigation adventure dive?

Probably depends on the instructor. I got lost on mine (didn't know how to use the compass) and my instructor just shrugged.

    questions re. SAC rate calc's

Yep, you got it. H and I are constant for any given tank. The manufacturer tells you what they are. Different tanks have different values. E.g. for an ST130, H=130, I= 3442. It is a measurement of volume. How big is this tank? It's big enough to hold 77.4 cu ft of air at 3000psi. If you have...

    questions re. SAC rate calc's

Dale, At J: Where you have 77.4/3000 that means that that particular tank would hold 77.4 cu. ft of air at 3000 psi. It is given for that tank, and doesn't change. The pressure of your actual fill affects how much air you actually have, but it doesn't change how much air you would have, if...

    Cave line vs ziptie

pg. 80 says clips should be 'wire-tied', but I'm not sure what that means. Maybe those black tie-offs in the pictures are wire?

    Exercise before/after diving?

I think I was taught in PADI OW that strenuous dives (i.e. dives with exercise) should be considered as 4m deeper than they actually were, for nitrogen loading.

Diver Indicted in 2003 GBR mishap

Well, that was interesting. The coroner and the pathologist agree that death was due to drowning. They list 4 possible causes of accidental drowning and discount each one. According to the doctor-witness, Tina was alive and struggling, then apparently went unconscious, and dropped to the...

Looking back on your OW course

I would say buoyancy, but I think we were supposed to learn that, and I just failed to. (Actually, our instructor told us not to worry about buoyancy control, as it would come on its own eventually. But I think it is in the PADI standards that we were supposed to learn it) One thing I would...

    Starting from scratch

The BP/W I borrowed from my instructor to do Fundies with had one of those Halcyon pockets on it. It's not very big compared to a thigh pocket, but it fits an SMB and a spool.
