I have been an ERDI instructor for 5 years and what I found is that the pool session can drag out and become tedious. What I do is after each skills session we play a game or have some kind of competition between squads/teams. It breaks things up and lets the students reset for the next skill...
We train 6 hours per month. Our SOG states that divers are required to attend a minimum of 6 drills per year plus the annual swim test, scuba review, and emergency procedures drill which are pool dives in January and February. So that totals around 48 hours per year.
Thanks for the info and the link. I ended up diving at Kings Beach today. Vis was around 6 feet with little current. Some areas had better vis than others especially around 20 feet it got a little more chummy. Average water temp was 70 degrees. All in all a good dive.
Thanks for the updates. I was thinking of heading to Kings Beach in Newport tomorrow (9/6) but if the vis is crappy and tides are funky I may just head to a local lake instead.
Potter Cove is descent but shallow, lots of sand. If you stay toward the rocks on the south side there are things to see. Once you get out beyond the point the current can be pretty strong. As far as Fort Adams I went off of Lincoln Dr. which is along the western side. Just before the road ends...
Our team stays away from knives on the legs. Inside or out they can be entanglement hazards. Our BPW are set up with a small blunt tip knife on the right waist belt and a set of shears in a sheath on the left waist belt along with a trilobite on the right shoulder. We also tape the fin straps to...
I go with both cheap shears and cheap knives. If they rot away or get lost not a big issue, just replace them. My current shears and knife have been around for about 3 years and still holding up. Rinsed and dried after each dive, wire brush off the rust and hit them with silicone spray.
Been diving the OTS Spectrum for about 5 years. I like the option of adding my second stage plus the fact you can squeeze your nose to equalize. I had an Interspiro AGA but lost a bunch of weight and had difficulty getting a seal. The Guardian and the Spectrum both have the double seal which...
Been hitting the lakes in northern RI and NE CT. Started the last week of March in balmy 44 degree water. Dove last Friday and surface temps up to 56 degrees. Keeping busy teaching a bunch of public safety diving classes in next few weeks but plan on heading to the ocean toward the end of May.
I have dove the D3/Zenith now for about 100+ dives and it breathes just as well as my Apeks. I use it primarily on my OTS Spectrum full face mask. I have also used the D1/Classic and its just as good as the D3/Zenith.
That is too bad. Volunteers in general are getting harder and harder to come by so I figured you would be a welcome addition. Unfortunately politics plays a big role in public safety, trust me on that one, 38 years both volunteer and career firefighter. The team I run is a public safety based...
ERDI prerequisites for the ERD 1 course are Open Water or equivalent, CPR, First Aid and oxygen administration and minimum age of 18. There is no requirement for being a first responder. I know of other training agencies that require affiliation with a public safety agency (PD, EMS, Fire). For...
Been looking at that spot. I believe it's called Compass Rose beach. Looks like max depth is around 15 feet with average of about 6-8 feet. Maybe some relics of the past under there worth looking for. There are 2 other beaches in Quonset point, Spink Neck which is in the northern part of the...
