Vacuum pump to dry inside of tank? Refrigeration people?

This seemed surprising so I poked around a bit - there seems to be enthusiasm in HVAC and some other areas for making a big deal out of the semantic point that gases like N2 or air are not literally "holding" water vapor - in the sense of inter-molecular attraction I suppose - it's just sitting...

    Difference between Conshelf 2nds

Their polish and chrome are a cut above, and all but the basic Pacer have the access port for adjustment.

    Difference between Conshelf 2nds

It's much nicer to have a port for tuning, but they are hard to find and many times as expensive as without. I've only seen one or two in the last year on eBay. There's one now on eBay in pretty OK condition with a primary, for a bit over $200.

Do you own your own tank just for home use? Cleaning and testing your gear?

An additional reminder for the AL80s: get the DOT-3AL tank, not the old shunned alloy model.

    Difference between Conshelf 2nds

Thanks, hadn't even looked there. Looks sold out now, but anyway they were 3x what I pay for a whole reg set, so not likely to indulge in one just yet. Several months back 5 new ones went up for sale on eBay for around $60 each, IIRC. By the time I put an offer in, they were snapped up. Maybe...

Do you own your own tank just for home use? Cleaning and testing your gear?

Are prices that high now? Just saw a modern Catalina AL80 go for $50 on craigslist SF Bay Area, and another unspecified tank is being offered at $110. ETA: I see new tanks are crazy-priced. Glad I held onto that AL80 after all.

Question Why are felt soled booties not more widely used?

I dunno the physics, except that fiberglass is pretty slick, especially when wet, unless perhaps awl-grip coated. I only use felt sole boots in Hawaii, motivated by shore diving experience, but the times I've gone boat diving there, it's been a challenge to stay on my feet without paying close...

There are at least two aftermarket 1st stage poppet sources, Trident and VDH (not the military historian), as I recall, and the Mares version works as well. In a pinch you can even resurface them. Conshelfs and 1st Gen Titans are pretty obsolescence-proof.

    Difference between Conshelf 2nds

There's another late variant I've been trying to find for awhile - the 1085 style with threaded plug opposite the inlet, so preload adjustment can be done on the poppet nut without removing the purge cover. I gather the XIV models still sold to the military have this feature, but they seem rare...

Do you own your own tank just for home use? Cleaning and testing your gear?

I find a pony bottle makes a better option for rinsing, but a spare tank around the garage is great for working on regs and as an alternative to a shop compressor, though air flow is limiting. Until I found a reliable 12V air pump that can do 3psi with good volume, I lugged around a small scuba...

Question Why are felt soled booties not more widely used?

The answer is because they're slippery as heck on fiberglass decks. Nothing beats them for slick rock however.

Advice for Kona dive trip -- shore dives and manta night dive operators

Just saw this - you'll probably get better responses if you post a new thread with your request in the title.

What's special about diving in Hawaii?

Ah, I see his comment about Niihau and Kauai diving. The other islands may be better served - I went to Kauai once in March, and no one was running any trips up north yet, not even tank rentals (but I had a great time shore diving Tunnels anyway! - got lobster, and had a white tip reef shark...

What's special about diving in Hawaii?

The diversity of fish species in Hawaii is good, but probably not like what can be found further west, just basing this on species counts. Malaysia-Philliphines is the cradle of fish life after all. Hawaii does have a number of endemics, and species that are not as common elsewhere. I guess...

Headed to Kona in April after long absence - anything new?

Since I'm here a couple of weeks, I've forgone the $250 charter dives in favor of shore diving (tanks from Kona Honu) and snorkeling. Conditions the first eight days were amazingly calm wind and seas, though I heard from divers at Kona Paradise that the visibility was slightly less than the...

What's special about diving in Hawaii?

The fish are exceptionally cute! Can't compare them to other Pacific spots, but definitely cuter than in the Caribbean IMO. Quite a lot of different species as well. Visibility on the Big Island west side is notable, as are the many easy shore diving sites. Most are right off, or nearly off...
