New wreck near Chicago found August 2020

Captain Nicole of Double Action Charters spotted what looked like a wreck on sonar while coming back from a different wreck site, and I got to join Double Action when they went to check it out for the first time on August 26, 2020 (thanks to Mike Pedersen!). It is indeed a wreck, and it was...

Truk Odyssey with a mixed group: yowza!

We are back from a great two weeks in diving, first in Palau (Palau Royal Resort and Sam's Tours) and then on the Truk Odyssey. Palau was great, with highlights including a real shark parade while drifting along a wall, and snapper spawning. I did a liveaboard (Ocean Hunter I) in 2009, and I...

New York Times on abalone divers

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/27/sports/in-hunt-for-red-abalone-divers-face-risks-and-poachers-face-the-law.html Every year, as steady as the tides, lifeless bodies are pulled from the cold, restless water along the rugged coastline north of San Francisco. Most of the victims are middle-aged...

Ultrasound water treatment system increasing visibility at Haigh Quarry?

While diving at Haigh today, my wife chatted with one of the staff and they said that about a month ago they installed some sort of ultrasound water treatment system to try and reduce the algae in the water. Maybe it's just my imagination, but the vis was maybe a bit better today...???

    CoCo View April 26-May 3

My wife and I are about to leave CoCo View at the end of our first visit here. It won't be our last! There are a lot of great trip reports on CoCo View here on Scubaboard, so I won't write a comprehensive trip report but instead make a few comments. My wife had only done 4 dives since 2008...

A spreadsheet comparing gas capacity and buoyancy of various tanks

I decided to upgrade from Aluminum 80s, and made myself a spreadsheet to look at the characteristics of various tanks: http://bit.ly/15qdGuq. I decided to buy a HP steel 120.

Beauty of a day on Lake Michagan, eh?

Today was a beautiful day to be out! No wind, bright day with only high clouds, fun group of divers on the Aquatica out of Burnham Harbor. I had tried to dive the Wells Burt once before but immediately surfaced due to 3 feet of visibility, but today was more like 20 feet (pictures). It's good...

    Diving in Bonne Terre

There are a few trip reports here regarding the Bonne Terre mine, but I thought I'd add my own. I went there this past weekend with a fun group organized by Susan of Chicagoland Four Seasons Scuba Club/Chicago Scuba Meetup. Susan arranged for our group to have the hospitality room at the Super...

    Diving near Vancouver in February?

I'll be in Vancouver for my first time in Feb. 2012. Thinking about a day or two at Whistler for skiing, or some diving. Do people dive in February? I have a drysuit and have done 5 C/41 F dives.

    Good experience with Ikelite toughness!

Two weeks ago I was on a dive boat that capsized in 120 feet of water on Lake Michigan (one leg injury, and the Coast Guard picked us up after a bit more than an hour later). My camera was dumped from the boat, sank to the bottom at an unknown rate, and spent around 3 days at 120 feet before...

What a Suunto Vyper looks like when you're dead

If I dived this profile, I should be dead: 3+ days at 117 feet, followed by rapid ascent. (Real story is that my gear was on the bottom in Lake Michigan after a dive boat I was on capsized, and gear was brought up using lift bags). Fortunately there's a Suunto service center in Chicagoland, so...

Tool for removing an Apeks drysuit dump valve

I wanted to swap out my Bullet skin for the Sport skin on my Whites Fusion drysuit. I had a devil of a time getting my Apeks dump valve unscrewed. Removal was impossible, it seemed! I found some words of wisdom on a Yorkshire Divers forum: "Last time i had it off my parts were stiff. After a...

Canon S95: Pelican Micro 1010 case for your backpack

I like to carry my compact camera around all the time in my backpack. I had my old Canon SD870IS in a Otter case that happened to fit it perfectly (with some foam tape lining for padding). For the Canon S95, the Pelican micro 1010 case fits it really well. I just put a piece of foam along the...
