When does sand come into the shore diving sites?

We're in Bonaire now and I've noticed that much of the sand that has previously been in the entrances to the shore diving sites has gone out to sea, making entries and exits more challenging than usual. Does anyone know whether there is a time of year or a month when sand is most likely to fill...

Where/when is it safe to dive?

I can't imagine that diving in itself would be a COVID-19 risk, but flying, staying in a resort, eating in a restaurant, sailing on a dive boat, interacting with dive masters and other divers, renting gear, buying air, etc. might be. So where is it safe to dive and when? Are we going to have to...

Where to stay on Isla Mujeres

Planning a trip to Isla Mujeres to snorkel with the whale sharks. I see that the snorkeling boats go out quite early. Can you recommend a place to stay that has an on-site whale shark snorkeling boat? Or a hotel/condo/timeshare/bnb that's convenient to a reliable snorkeling operator's boat dock?

Looking for a cruise that does not practice age discrimination

"Grumpy" describes me perfectly today. My buddy and I enjoyed diving with Captain Cook Reef Endeavor and with Paul Gauguin Cruises. But now National Geographic Expeditions has told me that I have to get a doctor's certification if I want to dive on any of their cruises because I'm over 55...

    underwater communication

How do I get the attention of a buddy who doesn't hear well? I've tried a tank banger and an Aquatec Sub-Alert. He doesn't hear either of those. Usually I have to swim up to him and grab his fin. If I were in trouble, that might not work very well.

    American Samoa: Laumei Divers

Has anyone done a dive with Laumei Divers on American Samoa? I found them through an online search, but there's little information and I haven't received a response to my email yet. If you have, I would be grateful for your opinion. If not, do you know of any other dive ops on American Samoa...

Moorea and Polynesia: Crown of Thorns

When I dove in Moorea several years ago, I saw that the reef was pretty much dead. It had been decimated by the Crown of Thorns Star Fish. Does anyone know whether it's recovered? Have other reefs in French Polynesia that were also attacked, recovered?

The cruise ship doesn't offer dive excursions in any of those ports. Is it advisable to try to dive off a cruise...

    Cuba required insurance

I am a US Citizen. I have booked a cruise to Cuba from the US. My travel agent tells me that Cuba requires medical/evacuation insurance for entry. Rather than purchasing the travel insurance that the cruise line is selling, I would like to use what I already have: DAN membership for evacuation...

Which dive op to use in Cozumel?

In the past we've dived with Blue XTSea, but this time we're arriving by ship and won't dock until 8AM. There's no way we could get to the harbor on time. We sail again at 4PM, so afternoon dives are not possible. Our ship, the Rotterdam, is supposed to dock at Punta Langosta. I already...

    discrimination based solely on age

I read a letter in the Summer 2016 issue of Alert Diver from a diver who wrote "There are dive shops that do discriminate based solely on age. I ran into this problem during a 2015 Caribbean cruise with my wife and grandson. I am a 67-year old experienced and active diver with many...

Roatan: Anthony's Key vs. Black Pearl

My buddy and I are booked on a Carnival Liberty cruise that will be in Roatan on October 22. Because of the possibility of weather-related changes to the ship's itinerary and the difficulty of matching the ship time with dive time, we've decided not to try to book our dive excursions...

    Insel baggage

How do you pack for MD-80 flights on Insel Air? In order to qualify for the 22 pound extra SCUBA gear baggage allowance, the gear has to be transported in a separate bag. The other checked luggage is restricted to 2 pieces combined for a maximum of 88 pounds. Since I'm staying in Bonaire for...

We're in Candidasa, Bali recovering from jetlag and looking for a dive op. The one connected with our hotel (Royal Bali Beach Club) is unknown to us and doesn't even seem to have a name. Two other possiblilties are Divelite and "Yes Dive". Does anyone know about these dive ops? Can anyone...
