Padi Scuba Diver Cert. vs. Open Water Cert.

I agree that scuba diving is not a cheap hobby, especially if you want to invest in your own gear and dive exotic places. I would recommend doing the OW whenever possible, so as not to be limited. Although there is plenty of life to see at <12 meters over Posidonia meadows here on the Costa...

Volunteer Eco Divers get free scuba diving

I have been Eco Diving, researching Posidonia oceanica seagrass and other coastal species, with the help of volunteer divers since 2003. Campaign to Protect Posidonia oceanica

In Cala Montgó on the Costa Brava, where we have been diving and carrying out research with volunteer divers for the past 12 years, we have witnessed an estimated 25% loss of Posidonia oceanica seagrass beds, mainly as a result of unregulated anchoring by pleasure boats each summer. Where there...

    Diving after breast surgery

I had to have a mastectomy in June 2007. I was devastated that my diving was to be interrupted mid research season especially when told that I wouldn't be able to dive for 18 months whilst undergoing treatment (chemotherapy & radiotherapy). Diving is my occupation as well as my passion and I...

Looking for Warm Europe area dive sites

Hi Lawrence Contrary to what has been said, the Mediterranean sea has a very rich biodiversity, with up to 12,000 recorded marine species, and new species still being discovered. The coastal zones supporting marine seagrasses like Posidonia oceanica are particularly productive as they are the...

Can you ID this Mediterranean blenny?

I've finally identified the blenny as Parablennius marmoreus - Seaweed blenny, although a couple of the photos labeled as this blenny on Fishbase seem to be of Parablennius rouxi and Parablennius pilicornis golden variety. According to Fishbase it’s not supposed to be living in the...

Can you ID this Mediterranean blenny?

Thanks Rick. The size and shape look about right and your link says that it appears in different colours. It doesn't mention the fin spot - which when you can see it is very distinctive. Also it's not supposed to be in the Med, although other species have migrated from the Red Sea. I'll...

Can you ID this Mediterranean blenny?

This blenny has been found it in a couple of sites in 1 to 8 meters whilst carrying out fish surveys with Kennaecodiving in the Med. It is about 10 cm long with small paired tentacles over the eyes and lives in a hole in the rocks, popping out to feed. It is black apart from a spot on the...

    Unidentified critter

Thanks. That one was all on it´s own and I haven´t seen anymore since. I do see cuttlefish in the same area but I don´t know what a bobtail squid looks like. Does anyone have a photo of a bobtail squid? Are they nocturnal?

    Unidentified critter

Can anyone identify the attached? It looks like an egg case and was found firmly attached to the Posidonia during last summer´s research in the Med. It measured about 1cm diameter by 1.5cm high. I can´t see my attachment, so I´ll put it in my gallery.

    Intro

Thanks for the welcome folks. Yes, it was unusual to find a siphonophore inshore - a result of the traumuntana which was really severe last winter. Planning to dive this weekend with some guys coming over from the UK. Will keep you posted. Gaynor
