why are there very few young divers?

Where are you? I had many years good diving with ICSAC (imperial) and AUSAC (Aston- Birmingham). Both clubs had a room full of good gear, IC had a RIB and an inflatable when I was there.... IIRC the RIB was always called IcyDiver. Aston was the same. 60 is a good number for a club, not too big...

mother-in-law taught me discover scuba and....

I think that there might be a simple explanation here....... Your Husband is from a family of divers, they sound like they eat, sleep, and drink diving, did the MiL assume that your husband had explained things to you before you did the DSD? Happened to my wife.... Instructor assumed that as we...

why are there very few young divers?

Many people have identified the major points as I see then.... 1. There just aren't the tv shown that there used to be. To have seen Cousteau on tv, you have to be at least 40...... And the nature / wildlife shows that there are, just don't seem to capture the magic of SCUBA. Without this...

    H-Valve vs Y-Valve

Strange? I don't actually know, but I would guess at a Y valve. Just draw lines for the air paths, and it will look pretty Y-ish. Jon

    "Allowed" to dive

Crosspoints - I agree! French system - that imposed upon us by law in the code du sport. FFESSM, FSGT, ANMP are just agencies that issue certifications under this legally imposed system. Only applicable in mainland France, or the DOM-TOM where the CdS applies. Basic French diver - just a...

    H-Valve vs Y-Valve

3/4 x14 is as rare as rocking horse droppings here, although it has existed in the past, and the link i gave does have a single valve with a DIN 3/4 neck thread which I think is the correct name here for 3/4x14. The CE standard and preceding NFC, BS, DIN etc standards have specified M25 for...

    H-Valve vs Y-Valve

That just confirms what I thought. Both sides are independent in both an H and a Y valve. Most Y valves have the added advantage that the two sides are completely independent with different air paths and dip tubes, whilst there is only one dip tube in an H valve that splits into two separate air...

    "Allowed" to dive

The iPad just ate my reply, so typing it back will by necessity be much shorter. In my club we actually get our beginners to watch some of the GUE style videos on YouTube for buoyancy, and aim to get them to repeat them, and after about 9 months in the pool they are doing that, similarly in...

    "Allowed" to dive

;) - tell me about it - I married one of them........ Yup, and then you have the French...... They don't recognize the EU norms, and have their own system. ---------- Post added August 28th, 2013 at 11:27 PM ---------- You can't judge a whole system by one photo........ The divers trained...

    H-Valve vs Y-Valve

I must be missing something here..... A Y valve has two independent exits, and one, the other, or both can be used, or not, as required. Jon

    Anyone ever dove drunk... ?!?

Seen it done. (At least I didn't start with 'Once I knew a buddy who....') As corvettejoe says, you see them very quickly emptying their stomachs overboard or, for the unfortunate, through their reg. Not fun. Jon PS Apeks regs have a good reputation for vomit passing........

    H-Valve vs Y-Valve

Y and H valves are both popular on this side of the pond. Two first stages are used on the backgas on almost all deco dives, and Y valves are 'cheap as chips'. Many different styles and makes are available. One piece Y valves are preferred by many over modular H valves as they have fewer failure...

    "Allowed" to dive

With a Gallic shrug of the shoulders, a scratch of the head, a twirling of the mustache, and a 'who are they, they're not French'. Show some deco qualifications and they are happy. Unfortunately they have the law to work with, so if you can help them fit you somewhere into their legal framework...

    "Allowed" to dive

I know this is a bit off the OPs topic, but I have to just correct this. In France it is most certainly a "legal" question. In France, all sport including diving are covered by the "code du sport". This has the full weight of French law behind it, and it describes everything about diving, from...

Where do I want my gauges, computer, etc?

Non AI computer on my right wrist. Watch (and dry suit dump valve) on the left. Then a triple console that is clipped off. The thing to watch out for is having a suitable hose on the triple console to make the compas useable. If it is too short you can't use the compass, and if it is too long...

How much should Diver Training cost?

Mine cost very little. When I was learning at Uni, it cost club membership, plus PADI materials and a PIC for each cert. This probably worked out at about £60 - 100 per certification upto an including divemaster. Now with the French system it costs about the same, buy the book (about 40€)...
