Big Island, with a family of non-divers. where should we stay? and more...

Thanks! We really wanted to go with St. Thomas, but booked a place in San Juan PR due to all other factors we had to weigh in. We will probably rent a car for most of the days there, and living in Vermont, we're use to driving over 40 minutes when we need something we can't get in town :) They...

What I meant was, we will divert to another US location, hence not looking at other amazing Caribbean islands, etc.

Thank you all for all the tips! Looks like will try to divert the vacation to either the Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico, trying to stay within the US, due to covid. Besides not finding flights and hotels (except for really expensive ones), it is mostly the idea of traveling about 24 hours door to...

Big Island, with a family of non-divers. where should we stay? and more...

Great info here, thanks! Kids are 5.5 and 9.5. we do want to go to the volcanoes park, and thanks for pointing out it's high altitude! We do want to plan ahead our schedule, and I will place diving accordingly. From the little I checked, looks like dives are expensive... But don't want to miss...

Big Island, with a family of non-divers. where should we stay? and more...

Hi, My wife offered that we'll go to Hawaii for the kids' winter break in a couple of weeks. (Yay!) We know nothing about Hawaii, and we're thinking of staying at the big island, in a hotel on the shoreline that is kids friendly. I will bring my dive gear with me and plan to squeeze a few dives...

A fake BPW for a small child, ideas?

Done! I might build a better one sometime, but I'm quite happy with this one. And sort of surprised that I was able to make it :snorkels:

A fake BPW for a small child, ideas?

Decided to start with it. I've cut some plywood and lined it with PVC chrome sticker. The backplate is also a prototype. Bit should be good for now. All is ready for the harness setup, tomorrow.

A fake BPW for a small child, ideas?

I'm afraid it'll have sharp edges, and not sure how to cut the harnes' slots

A fake BPW for a small child, ideas?

Update: I decided that if I'm going through all that, it should be something he can use more often. So... It'll double as a backpack! Wings 1.0 is ready, many things I'll improve next time. I haven't used the sewing machine four years. The air tank will be a drinking bottle. We will be...

How important is a test dive before choosing a drysuit?

Thanks for your reply. The more I think about it, the more confused I get. I do lean towards DUI on the upper-level range, but it might change. I realized that for every product they'll be the ones who advocate for and the ones who dislike it. It seems like for the more popular brands, they'll...

A fake BPW for a small child, ideas?

HDPE plate, covered in chrome-looking sticker sheet. Wing from a Cordura fabric with a bit of hollow fiber filling for some loft. I am still thinking of the regs and hoses. A 5-year-old should be happy with a mouthpiece on a surgical tube attached directly to the bottle's cap. And the fun...

A fake BPW for a small child, ideas?

I'm getting there. Got most of what I need, will try a cardboard prototype and if it works, I will take it to the next step. I like the idea of a realistic scuba-make-believe kit. The plate's length is 10 inch, and that fits him great. So I guess soda bottle should work for a tank and will have...

How important is a test dive before choosing a drysuit?

I want to dive as much as possible and be warm and comfortable while diving. IMHO being cold while diving is not safe and not fun. I know that I will end up buying a drysuit, the question is how much I'm going to spend on it. I'm getting used to the idea that I'm about to spend a lot of money on...

How important is a test dive before choosing a drysuit?

Just making sure I understand, Is it because you can dive it with no undergarment, or for other reasons? My local shop offers mostly DUI and Aqualung. Both have many good options, but in the 1500-2000 range, I'm not sure if I'm willing to spend this much. I will keep looking and thinking.

How important is a test dive before choosing a drysuit?

Thank you all for sharing! Great info. The water here (Lake Champlain) is cold, it looks like shell/ trilam is the way to go. With the zebra mussels everywhere, It'll have to have good protection against tears and cuts.

How important is a test dive before choosing a drysuit?

ok, I'm getting a little confused now. And this is great :) I didn't really think about the meaning of a suit that doesn't fit perfectly. Makes sense that excess fabric means more air pockets, which affect the trim, will add unnecessary buoyancy, and will complicate air venting, etc. But with...

How important is a test dive before choosing a drysuit?

The last couple of dives in a two-piece 7ml with water in the low 50s made it clear that wet suit season is ending any day. Air temps are now below freezing, and it doesn't help as well. I know that in an ideal world, I should at the very least try different styles of suits before deciding on...

Used Legend, new Core, or new DGX regulator?

That was my choice, and I'm happy with it. With the money I saved by choosing a used reg, I bought a tank, which helps with diving more often (dive sites are far from the local shop). The math is simple, diving a lot with a good reg is better than diving a little bit with the dream reg.

A fake BPW for a small child, ideas?

Thanks all for your comments. I ordered stuff from strapworks for the harness (I chose 1-inch hardware, now realizing 1.5 would have been better. learning in progress), still considering the other parts. I Will update and upload some pics in case someone else wants to get their toddler into diving.
