pretty much all models are true work horses, the brut is one of my favorites along with the maximis. You will most likely hear alot of different opinons on this board but my 2 psi worth says you can't go wrong with a good sherwood reg.

If you are lucky enough to have some old school dive friends, then most likley they have an old back plate laying around...
with a back tube your body is more like the keal of a ship when your under the water and your horozonal is greatly improved, it will take a little work on your trim so try to dive the same type and size tank every dive until you figure out your weighting needs and the total feel of the system...
Where you going is packed with great saltwater diving unless you want to drive the 5 or 6 hours north I'd have to say your already in the spot to enjoy some great drift dives and wrecks!

I would have to say that the requierments are to make your instructor happy with your proformance ,sometimes thats not easy to do with a naui instructor but it will end up with you being a much better prepared diver

I own the x8-130 and love it. In fresh water I've discarded ALL lead and saltwater only cost me six pounds.
I'm 5ft 7in and the size of the tank is perfect for my trim, I also dive with a LP 104 and get the same feeling .
If you can ,dive a few different types of steel tanks before you buy.

Well,there's Blue Grotto a neat little deep dive around 95 ffw, Vortex Springs offers a forgiving cave dive thats lit with rope lights and Rainbow River is always a good dive,Loyd Bridges trained alot of divers there.
