Question Canister lights: 90degree SM attachment vs regular, and adjustable power levels

FWIW, I have a Tecline Teclight and use it with either the small canister, or an Ammonite battery that I also use for suit heat. I think it’s a very underrated light, the ergonomics of the light head are excellent and the combo spot/flood is a good combination. It makes for a surprisingly good...

DGX 1000-6/8 vs Orcatorch D710 as "primary light"

I don’t have direct experience with the 710, but I do have a DGX 1000-6 and I’ve used it extensively as a primary around the PNW. It’s a great light and I’d have no hesitation using it. If you want to save a little money, the Sofirn SD06 has (in my opinion) a better beam and it’s a little...

Question Do we have viable alternatives to Shearwater?

Have you looked at the Heinrichs Weikamp computers? I have the 'Bottomtimer' from there, and it's an exceptional piece of hardware. Really bright display as well. Their 'real' computers (OSTC 2, OSTC Sport, OSTC 5) are all open-source, you can view the code here. OSTC+ is rated to 120m, OSTC 5...

    NPT to QD hose setup

I have the same booster. The QD for the inlet (at least on mine, from the factory) is a Milton V-type (European NW 7.2). Those are easily obtainable from Amazon or Harbor Freight.

    Question Drysuit seal replacement cost?

Yeah, that seems about right. The unit cost on neoprene seals are something like $50 for a neck seal and $60 for a pair of wrist seals (at least in Canada), so you're something like $200 for all the labour, which sounds about right to me.

    Booster Recommendations please

I’ve been using the smallest NRC tec-booster, zero complaints. The design seems very well optimized for boosting oxygen, and it’s nice that you don’t have to regulate the input gas down.

Question Where to buy an Apeks Yoke clamp screw

I have a drawer full of unused (and useless to me) Apeks yoke fittings, from regs that I’ve converted to DIN. For the cost of shipping from BC, I’ll send you a new one.

Apeks DB4/MTX-RC/R Environmental End Cap cleaning

I'd highly recommend Salt-Away, which is listed as safe for use on plastics and is very good at lifting the salt crystals. It does leave a thin residue, so for parts that are going to be in contact with high-pressure gas I normally clean them after using Salt-Away with Simple Green. For your...

    GUE CCR-F vs tech 1

FWIW, the gas bill of T1 is something like $500, which is not nothing but also not a huge consideration in a world of $10k rebreathers and $2k course fees.

    BCD/wing switch block valve

They’re very nicely made. Machining the male ports on the top (rather than using a threaded insert) makes the whole block a fair bit smaller than it would otherwise be.

    Halcyon Symbios

As posted elsewhere, Arne Sieber of Oxygen Scientific appears to have the patent on most of the relevant technology of the Symbios - magnetically coupled transmission, the HUD, the oxygen sensor, the fancy double-hose BOV. My assumption is that Halcyon is lending its not-insignificant...

Dry gloves - with or without drysuit seal?

I have very, very loose silicone seals in mine. You have to be aware that having loose/no seals makes a glove leak quite catastrophic. I carry a spare set of Marigolds in my pocket, which I can (and have) put on over my regular dry gloves if you shred a glove mid-dive.

    GUE CCR-F vs tech 1

I agree with all the benefits you outline, but I’m curious, do you not think the same applies when doing T1 —> CCRF —> CCRT1 upgrade ? You still have to do the 50 shallow dives after CCRF with this path, the only difference is you get some experience with OC tech diving (and particularly gas...

    Wurkkos DL08 underwater video

Protection circuits are typically for undervoltage protection. In the DL08 you don't need to use a protected cell, as the undervoltage protection is handled by the light itself (and this makes sense, when the charger is also built into the light body). You're totally fine to charge the battery...

    GUE CCR-F vs tech 1

I’m not sure, I’m scared to ask though. But at my local store in Victoria, it’s $3.25 per cubic foot, which (with just doing top-ups in my own tanks) works out to about $100 for a 21/35 dive. Not great, not terrible.

    GUE CCR-F vs tech 1

I did T1 in 2022, CCR-F in January this year, and just finished my CCR T1 upgrade a few weeks back. All of those were on Vancouver Island, FWIW. Personally, I think the path of T1 —> CCR-F —> CCR T1 was very worth it. I got ~60 T1 dives in on open circuit in 18 months, which I hope gave me a...

    New Diver from Vancovuer BC!

Congrats! I'm an active GUE diver over in Victoria - I know there's a very strong GUE community on the island and in Seattle as well, less sure about the mainland. The ARSBC has sunk a bunch of wrecks around BC, including one that Sea Dragon goes to out of Horseshoe Bay quite frequently. There's...
