I went to one of my favourite crayfish (lobster) spots the other day. It’s a rock in the middle of nowhere with a massive crack in the middle that always holds heaps of crays.
It was so good to be back in the water since I’ve been working away for the last month and haven’t been able to dive...
Simple is good. I just did a family reunion/holiday at Maui and ended up taking heaps of the family snorkeling. My immediate family all had traditional snorkels and found them easy to use (I'm the only diver in our family).
Several members of the extended family had the full face masks provided...
I’ve got the following:
3/2 surf wetsuit (mainly used for surfing but it’s here with me in Hawaii for scuba)
Old 5mm open cell 2 piece for summer free diving
New 5mm open cell 2 piece for winter free diving
7/8 semi dry for scuba year round in NZ
Eventually I’ll have a dry suit for winter...
I think it worked out alright. Here’s a picture of me taking a picture!
I reckon I would have been sweet with board shorts and a rash shirt. This water is so warm!
I do the same. I found that it felt really weird when I first got my regs and my SAC went up significantly. I've got my mk25evo/g260 setup they way I like it now, and wouldn't change a thing.
I stopped caring about my SAC a while ago. It has gone up since then, but I don't mind. I don't think...
I’ve used my 3/2 a few times for scuba diving in the middle of summer here in Nz in 20 deg C water. That’s not enough neoprene for that situation. I wear the same suit for surfing in 12 degree water.
80 deg F is 26 deg C. I’ve been using my 8/7 semi dry for scuba diving in 12 degree C water...
The boat our club uses does the same on almost every dive. Short scoped with a grapnel anchor on a rocky reef. The skipper has never dragged afaik, or gotten the chain stuck.
We had a situation a while back where a few drivers got swept away in current. We got most of the divers on the boat and...
I don't normally use additional weight. I've got a very heavy old tank, or I'm using my twinset. Previously when I had a standard jacket, I used 2x 1.5kg on a rubber weight belt. I've become far more fussy about trim since then however.
Trim pockets on cam bands would work well, but I don't...
Good point re cable ties. I wanted to do that but my plate doesn't really suit. It will be easy enough to drill a few more holes in it though, so I think I will do that and use cable ties.
I also can't stand people mucking around on a dive boat. On my club trips I'm normally one of the first in...
Hi
I've got a trip to Maui coming up and I have been trying to figure out what the best weight setup will be while I am there. For single tank diving I normally dive a halcyon Stainless bp/w with STA and some heavy Asahi tanks with a Beuchat Med C zip 8/7 semi dry and 4th element tec shorts...
I bought a sealife sports diver phone housing the other day and took it to my local lake to give it a test run. I'm off to Maui in a few weeks and wanted to make sure I knew how to use it and that it didn't have any issues.
I'm not a photographer and the water was green as, but I think the...
Yep. Pretty sad. We were going to stay in west Maui but decided to rebook in south Maui even though the resort in west Maui said we were still ok to visit. South Maui businesses seem to be struggling big time, hopefully it picks up soon for them.
I'm heading there soon for a holiday. At this stage I'm planning on using Maui diamond for a lanai dive and then island style for molokini backwall. They seem to be the recommended choice for those 2 dives. South Maui is desperate for tourism now so please go and support them. That's what the...
I highly recommend getting a computer that has been designed for freediving. I’ve got a mares smart as my freedive/back up scuba computer and a peregrine as my main scuba computer.
I occasionally do days where the first session is freediving and the second is scuba. You just have clear the...
Hey mate. Nz has some great diving. September is pretty cold. Depending on where you go you can dive wet if you want to avoid the hassle of learning to dive dry. I dive a 7/8 semi dry year round. I don’t know of many dive shops that have a good selection of rental dry suits. Global dive in...
