    lost

Just one more reason why I prefer a belt. I have found over 10 pouches on dives in the last 5 yrs. Until they find a way to have pouches stay in place even on experienced instructors, I will always wear a belt.

Newbie Question: How can I find out the conditions at a dive spot?

Regarding Hanauma Bay, it is similar to sharks cove in the aspect that the water comes in over the reef rocks and has no way out except the channel in the middle, so tide or no tide, it can be a tough swim to get back to shore....always better to plan enough air to swim those channels along the...

Newbie Question: How can I find out the conditions at a dive spot?

Everything smellzlikefish said is true. I think the currents people may be referring to with regard to Sharks cove is most often wave surge or they may be talking about the prevailing current within the cove itself created by water rushing into the tidepools and forced out along the shoreline...

    Gray Snapper

I have seen an increase in Grey Snappers over the last few months on dives around Oahu. I seem to see one now on almost every dive, where before it was not that often.

Attention: Big surf is no joke on the north shore

The worst part of the whole thing was videotaping what I knew was going to happen and nothing could be done...they were outside of yelling range. We were ready with a cell phone and 911 dialed and waiting to press "call". HTA should use this video for a PSA and play it on all planes arriving...

Last Saturday while working the education outreach tent for Malama Pupukea Waimea, we witness an all too often event at Sharks Cove. These two people learned the hard way what big surf on the north shore is capable of doing with little or no warning. Visitors to Hawaii, please use caution when...

Pacific Trash Vortex! Wow! I had no idea it was this bad!

thats still about 270 sq miles of SOLID plastic if you put it all together...the part that really bugs me about this is the following: That commonly quoted phrase is a gross misquote of the man that originally made the statement. Capt Charles more after returning from one of his earliest...

Drowned snorkeler off Lanai -- any more details?

Well said Jackson, and speaking as an instructor, I can say that if everyone that came here to dive read and applied what you wrote, we wouldn't nearly have as many "close call" stories that we hear so often.

Drowned snorkeler off Lanai -- any more details?

I have been on a charter with a fatality and I can understand the hesitance to give details. This is a serious legal matter and statements made can be held against people who made them or the organization they work for, regardless of the accuracy of the statement.

    Best UW Photo?

Gabe, Here is the shot I was talking about. I think if you click on the thumbnail, it will expand. This shot was all about timing! You can see the spout from the one behind, through the water.

Pacific Trash Vortex! Wow! I had no idea it was this bad!

Teri, Its already on our shores (Kamilo bch, South Point on BI & Kahuku bch on Oahu) I just gave a tour to a guy who is studying the possibilities of using the plastic as a raw material for products. He collected about 30 lbs of assorted plastic and is now analyzing the effects of sun...
