I spoke to the diver who witnessed the speargun incident firsthand, we have both dived off that boat. But he said nothing about it being "the same thing" as the unfortunate fatality which is the subject of this thread. As I understood it, there was no diver involved on that one. Here's more...
My personal favorite is Never, ever surface without an SMB over your head following a free ascent. I mean, seriously.. any diver doing a drift should deploy an SMB at depth. It's not rocket science, it requires about $50 worth of gear, and makes it easier and safer for everyone.
^You state the obvious. There was a lot of back and forth on Dustin's FB page (he didn't have a website, all his bookings and communication were via FB). He was saying how he could go out regardless of the shutdown because of his FSL license, several people questioned his logic and his...
It's bold because you are saying the captain operated the boat in an unsafe manner. At least one example was provided on this thread by the poster you directed your comment at- which resulted in a propeller strike fatality that was clearly not the fault of the captain- the two divers jumped in...
I was always very impressed how skillfully he would back up so close I could step onto the latter with not so much as one fin kick. I never really thought about the risk until now, although as I said a few other divers commented that it made them a bit nervous but I just shrugged it off. He...
Dustin has/had a unique style of picking up divers. Rather than coming at them head on and slowing down and stopping with the transom next to them, or circling around them and coming to a slow stop, he'd swing the boat around and back up directly towards the diver, hitting the forward gear to...
This is from a YELP review posted a short time ago. I include the entire text because I suspect it will be deleted due to what will be an ongoing investigation.

Today this boat owner/captain of "Southern Comfort" left two scuba divers out at sea...
I have dived with this Dive Operation many times. Captain Dustin McCabe just started running his new boat this past week, taking divers out despite the COVID lockdown, saying he was not restricted because he had some sort of FSL license for commercial fishing.
He left 2 divers in the water in...
Florida Keys closed to all visitors and all existing visitors must depart by 3/22.
All hotels, campgrounds and vacation rentals ordered to be shut down for at least 2 weeks.
Contrary to what our optimistic friend asserted in the post above, there is no connection between what the US Government has done to ease the burden of taxpayers and what a private company might do in terms of an expired warranty.
During this time of crisis many companies are doing things to...
Compression and flare fittings are two completely different things. Flare fittings are used primarily in propane and natural gas applications such as barbeque grills and gas dryers.
I'm pretty sure I called Conch to ask them about renting Nitrox tanks for a dive with another operator; to my recollection they don't let the tanks offsite.
Key Dives in Islamorada has got some steel you can pick up and take wherever you want.
