Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

They'll probably put a time limit and date certain on the grandfathering. Like maybe, '5 years more from this last inspection. And then on such and such date certain 5 years from now, this COI for this boat will no longer be renewable for this commercial purpose." Gives the owner some time to...

Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

Determine the cause, sure of course. But that determination once reached will not alter the fact (if it is a fact) that no one was on watch. I mean....it's a federal law and a centuries old tradition of the sea. The only thing that could make a darn bit of difference is if the NTSB report is...

Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

I have to admit I didn't get all this from the COI I read that has been linked in prior posts here. But I'll gladly defer to those with greater experience here, since all of my boats have been of the uninspected class.

Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

Sure...I have no about how often this happens both military and civilian. And until something tragic happens it's dealt with in an "administrative" fashion. But when a tragedy or even jus an accident occurs, things get real serious real fast.

QUOTED POST HAS BEEN DELETED BY MODERATOR I'm not surprised by the unconditional defense of the company, boat, and crew offered by long standing patrons. I'm sure there are many very real friendships involved. It's normal human loyalty, and I would expect nothing less. The rest, like me...

Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

In my experience, on a vessel of this size, the anchor watch and the fire watch are the same person. In fact that person would be watching out for any kind of potential emergency issue. We're not talking about a 500 foot long freighter here.

Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

This article reads like this was a diving accident. It wasn't. It was a boating accident. It could've just as well happened to a boat load of fishermen or a boat load of sightseers. That said there may very well be some needed changes......to CG boat regulations....not SCUBA directly. These...

Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

I'm sorry....I didn't mean to imply that the crew doing a night dive in and of itself bothers me (assuming sufficient crew would be left aboard, if crew night dives are SOP). I was bothered by the assumption that it was the crew, since the only statements I've seen say that "a night dive...

Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

This is actually something that's been bothering me as well. The only thing I've seen are some statements that there had been a night dive. There has been no definitive statement I'm aware of, that it was the crew making that night dive after the passengers had retired for the night. Yet many...

Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

I think you're probably right. Unfortunately, the NTSB moves by its own schedule. I imagine once they succeed in raising the wreck and getting it to where it can be examined, a whole new avenue of conversation will open up.

Tough love for the industry's lithium addiction

Well, I know that I will be reexamining my own practices in this area. I think my own thinking and practices on this subject has been a bit on the lax side.

Tough love for the industry's lithium addiction

I don't know. It just surprised me. A lot of things are surprising me on this tragedy with regards to CG minimums. In my house, I have 3 smoke alarms strategically distributed. They are all powered off house power and each has battery backup, and they are all wired together. If one goes...

Yes I understood you correctly. I should've been more clear. I also meant interconnected. I also should've added powered off of boat power with battery back up.

Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

Yes the stand alone alarm minimum requirement for a vessel of this size and stated purpose surprised me as well. I would think that interconnected alarms with battery backup and emergency lighting, with the alarms wired to a central panel in the wheelhouse, with visual and audible alarms would...

Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

I am new to this board so forgive me if I make some mistakes in etiquette. I've been a lifelong boater since I'm 9 yrs old and am 58 now, and I come from a long line of professional seamen. I've been diving for 20 years now. This story has overwhelmed me both as a sailor and as a diver. I've...
