    Bring a long string with a small weight on the end. Drop it into the body of water and watch what it does. Will it tell you everything about what's going on 50' below? Probably not. But it's something.

I would imagine it will be rather difficult to find the exact cause given the extent of the damage however as long as there are people speculating I am going to wager a guess that it was a cheap battery from China or HongKong, probably one that was repackaged...
