Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

I read somewhere else that the Conception crew was doing a night dive right before the fire. Has that been brought up on this thread? Hard to tell with so many pages and so many posts.

What’s the future for California dive boats?

Being stuck/trapped behind an obese person who couldn't fit through the only emergency exit during a fire would be terrifying and a horrible way to die.

    Typical liveaboards.

Aggressor Liveaboard. 24 divers maximum, about a dozen private staterooms, most on main deck. Walk out the door, make a left or right and you're clear of the inside of the boat in a few steps. I would never book a liveaboard that puts me in one big room with 3 dozen people. Talk about a...

    OOA on the Vandenberg

Should have used the downtime to get yourself a solo cert and purchase the few pieces of required additional gear. Problem solved.

    OOA on the Vandenberg

Wonder how often or likely that is to happen. I'm no instructor, so I'll ask is it protocol to donate an octopus in this situation? Seems excessive.

    OOA on the Vandenberg

700 psi when beginning an ascent from 90' is not an emergency in most cases. Don't create drama (and possibly panic) when there is none.

Trying to compensate for feet down trim when wearing no exposure protection and little weight

And yet when other people ask about moving weight around and cutting as much weight as possible, "they're overthinking". Yeah ok. No, it can't.

Legal considerations for the Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

My post makes no sense (about none of the divers being found in the common areas?). The way I figure it, if the victims were awake and aware and surrounded by fire with no other way out, at least some of them would have forced their way through the flames in the salon to get out that large...

Legal considerations for the Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

Given that it appears none of the victims made it to the common areas it's probably irrelevant.

Trying to compensate for feet down trim when wearing no exposure protection and little weight

A diver who is in anything less than perfect trim is using some, or even a lot of movements to compensate. The closer one gets to that "perfect trim" the less movement is required, less energy expended, less gas used- and that means a longer, more comfortable dive. To say "Oh it doesn't matter...

Dive Boat Conception Missing Divers Relief Fund

I'm a member of at least one FB group whose Admin deleted the fundraiser and posted an explanation as to why, and it makes complete sense. This particular FB page serves a valuable and important function of analyzing Scuba Diving Accidents so divers are better prepared and less likely to repeat...

Legal considerations for the Fire on dive boat Conception in CA

Interesting question, I looked it up. DAN will pay for the loss of scuba equipment if it's due to water or flood damage. So it would have had to have gotten flooded from the boat sinking, before it got burned. I guess they have ways of determining if that's actually what happened.

Airsource difficult to keep in mouth

An AirSource is a BCD mounted regulator, it's not free on a hose like a typical second stage octopus, and as such it's not all that easy for a diver to hold in his or her mouth. That's the tradeoff for being more streamlined with one less hose. Odds are it won't be used much, except for perhaps...

People who die in scuba diving accidents leave behind people who have this annoying tendency to sue anyone even remotely connected to the incident.

Fatality in the Vandenberg Wreck, Key West Florida

You were in danger from the moment the divemaster said "you are buddying with him". From not only the physical danger but from possibly being sued for damages if he had an accident.

Remember when airlines asked for able bodied volunteers for Exit rows?

I've always felt that people who are in good shape such as me, and not overweight should be given a larger baggage allowance. Vice Versa for the morbidly obsese who probably should be charged even for a personal item.
