    Solo with no BCD?

You want redundancy when diving solo. Don't let yourself grow complacent.

    Air share

1 - An experienced buddy had regulator failure. He just went for my octo and then got my attention and we surfaced without incident. 2 - An inexperienced buddy with buoyancy control issues corked with arms flailing, yanking the regulator from my mouth on his way up. I just switched to my own...

Any reason not to get a AL30, compared with a AL19?

The extra weight shouldn't be a factor because you'll not be using your pony at all 99% of the time, thus the weight is consistent, thus you'll be able to drop some lead, and as others have said here, you won't notice underwater in any case. For calculating your needs, are you factoring in a 30...

What solo cert do you have, has it ever been turned down?

I've never been on a boat that allowed divers to begin the dive solo. Been on plenty of boats where buddies got separated by accident and finished the dive solo.

    Taboo

Among non-diving friends and family, all the time. Among other divers, much less. Though last summer I surfaced from a solo night dive to a small army of ambulances, fire trucks, police officers. All for me! Apparently a bystander thought I was in distress.

    Personal Limits to Solo Diving

I'm only recreationally trained, and this is what I've come up with from much reading, class, and practice, taking the most conservative approach when sources contradict each other. Redundant air, mask, computer, light, cutting tools. Familiar areas and sites only. No solo diving in places...

    question about solo diving

Best you can do is make sure you're following a good dive plan (e.g. staying within your oxygen toxicity limits), staying healthy, seeing your doctor regularly, and staying out of the water if you have some medical condition that predisposes you to losing consciousness at inconvenient times...

Does everyone really need an SPG? (w/transmitter)

As a general principle redundancy is a good thing to have on solo dives. If primary piece of equipment fails, you fall back to redundant and end the dive. In practice, my SPG (actually a second computer on a hose) is more of a "save a dive" sort of thing for the 1 in 50 dives where I didn't...

Where did you solo dive today?

Mukilteo, WA at night. Abandoned a GoPro outside an octopus den and then came back to retrieve it an hour later. I doubt the octopus came out because when I returned a very fat harbor seal had found my lights and was using them to hunt the area. But maybe I got lucky and captured some macro seal...

Octopus Mating Habits - Female Rejects Male

Here we see a female parked atop her den, broadcasting to the world that she is ready to mate. A much smaller male has responded to the call. For some reason he does not meet her standards and she chases him away several times.
