Drysuit: Choosing between SFTech and Otter

Thank you both. Yea I might be diving in the tropics, but I get cold easily, which isn't so fun at 100 metres where the temperature really drops and the dives can run as long as 3.5 - 4 hours. Was surprised to see that the TNT Pro is actually the same weight as Otter's light models. Think I'm...

Drysuit: Choosing between SFTech and Otter

Thanks for your replies and suggestions. Yea I'm in two minds about picking a top of the line suit as my first one. On one hand, it might be better to learn with a cheaper suit first in case I damage it. On the other, I've been told by a few people that bought cheap suits first because they...

Drysuit: Choosing between SFTech and Otter

I'm wanting to buy my first drysuit but currently torn between an SFTech and an Otter. I've heard great things about both companies and their suits, so I'm wondering if the SFTech justifies the greater price? I plan to use this suit for tech diving in the tropics where I'll be taking up to...

CCR supported locations throughout the Indo-Pacific

Thank you very much for such a thorough overview of the Philippines. I've spoken to a potential local collaborator who mentioned quite a few of the same dive shops, although I wasn't aware of some that you mentioned so thanks for that. Marine Conservation Philippines definitely sounds like it...

CCR supported locations throughout the Indo-Pacific

Yea big stuff is great but it's not essential to my research. I'm interested in the fish community as a whole, and will probably be spending a lot of time looking for smaller, potentially undescribed species. The important thing is that there are actually mesophotic reefs down there, as opposed...

CCR supported locations throughout the Indo-Pacific

Thanks for the suggestions and your thorough descriptions. The Solomon Islands sound great and I'd love to do some research there as well as PNG. Problem with liveaboard diving for research is that I'd need to charter a boat purely for myself and colleagues, which is unlikely to fit within my...

CCR supported locations throughout the Indo-Pacific

Sounds great. Wouldn't have expected to be able to see all of that. Thanks, I've followed them all on instagram. Judging by their photos you definitely weren't over exaggerating about the size of those surgeonfish schools! Yea I've been to the Gilis once before. Didn't bother diving after...

CCR supported locations throughout the Indo-Pacific

Yea I really love diving in Indonesia as well. It has always been top of my list for where I want to conduct my research, it's just a shame that their research permit application process is so ridiculous. Interesting. I haven't done any diving in the Gilis myself but I follow a couple of the...

CCR supported locations throughout the Indo-Pacific

Yea the pricing I mentioned for tech diving in Okinawa was for Dauntless Divers. Apparently there are some decent deep spots to dive near Cape Zanpa. Would also love to dive deeper at Cape Hedo as well having only been to about 40m when I was last there. Very true. My university is pretty...

CCR supported locations throughout the Indo-Pacific

Thanks Jim. Hawaii is probably a little too far east for me. Also, I'm mainly looking for areas where little research has been done before, whereas Hawaii is probably one of the most extensively studied locations for MCE research. I had some good dives in Okinawa while I was there, but the...

CCR supported locations throughout the Indo-Pacific

Hi, I'm going to be starting a PhD towards the end of this year and I will be studying coral reef fishes on mesophotic reefs (30 - 150 m). I will probably end up limiting my research to about 80m. I have a few locations in mind for my field work, but I was wondering if members here could...

    Contact cleaner of choice

That's what's confusing me though. What differentiates 'good stuff' from not so good stuff? I tried asking a local rebreather instructor what he thought, but he reckoned the specialist wd40 contact cleaner could damage the o-rings in my battery and e-module. His English wasn't great though, so...

    Contact cleaner of choice

Ah great, hadn't realise. Thank you. Yea the variety of versions was giving be a bit of a headache so I've always just opted for the gold gn5 that I've seen a number of online shops selling in Europe and the US.

    Contact cleaner of choice

So the most popular contact cleaner I've seen seems to be DeoxIT Gold GN5, with a number of online dive shops selling it themselves. Problem is, I'm unable to find it in Taiwan where I'm currently working. Could anyone please recommend some alternatives? The specialist WD40 electrical contact...

Benefits of redundant continuous pO2 monitoring?

Oh right, wasn't aware that other systems had HUDs that could display pO2. Have only used the Poseidon. I had considered getting the M28, but had decided on a sheerwater that can also be used for when I dive OC.

Benefits of redundant continuous pO2 monitoring?

I've only ever dived on the Poseidon, so I don't know how the HUD of other rebreathers compare, but on the poseidons HUD you only get a light/vibration telling you if/when to switch to OC. Yes it is possible to get a 3rd cell holder for use with a Fischer.

Benefits of redundant continuous pO2 monitoring?

Oh I wasn't considering a third. My confusion was regarding the Perdix or petrel (via the Fischer) for the second. As I've said elsewhere in this thread I was planning to get the petrel, but was left confused by comments I saw elsewhere (cant remember which forum) saying the Perdix would be fine...

Benefits of redundant continuous pO2 monitoring?

That's what I had wondered previously, as with the Perdix, if your primary computer were to die, then with no secondary pO2 monitor it would be prudent to switch to your bail out. So yea I agree redundancy would be better, I was just confused why I'd heard others elsewhere downplaying the need...

Benefits of redundant continuous pO2 monitoring?

That's what I had originally thought, but I'm now struggling to see how having two O2 monitoring computers is beneficial, as if both computers are deriving their information from the same O2 cells, then surely they'll both just say the same thing? Therefore under what circumstances is having a...

Benefits of redundant continuous pO2 monitoring?

So for someone using a Meg or a poseidon for example, the Perdix would suffice as a secondary computer? Just wondering if there are any real advantages for choosing the petrel in this case? Not having to deal with a connector cable is certainly appealing.
