Basic gear from mid-twentieth-century Spain: Other manufacturers

These are rather different looking fins, no ribs or strakes on the blade and plastic strap buckles instead of metal that was the usual choice. The Technisub Caravelle had a rather simple plastic blade as did the Mares Plana.

Something for other than mill pond conditions that will move the mask around on your face given that it has been provided with a long lever to do so. Landlubber thinking produced these masks just as it does the full face horrors we see today, some equipped with battery powered fans to bolster...

Reflects the diversity of facial contours, not all masks fit everybody. Someone might like a particular mask design, but it is no good if it does not fit them.

Often you see this type of mask that allows pinching of the nose much easier, but has the faceplate some distance out from the eyes rather than taking advantage of the two lens design, Sure it is still a single face plate, but so was my Minimax of 50 years ago made by Beuchat. No relation to the...

Reminds me of the "Marin" mask which was of a similar shape right down to the compensator pockets in the nose area.

Well that is definitely a clone of something else as I have never seen their masks, but I have certainly seen that one. Bear in mind a lot of the advertising blurbs are written by marketing copywriters who just make something up which they feel sounds right, such as a "deep diving mask" when it...

Some of these masks look kind of familiar, the last one reminds me of an Occhio mask, but that is purely from memory as I have not checked it. The stainless steel clip frame mask bar the plastic blue buckles looks like something from GSD. When the latter went out of business it is possible their...

You can see elements of Nemrod's guns in the Safari Sub models, but they have done a bit of copying with the Mares Titan handgrip, seen here.

At a guess I think the upper tube is soft and can kink, the idea is the float swings up as the snorkel body descends and causes the top section to buckle over creating a partial closure of the air tube, more as a splash entry protector rather than as a dry snorkel. The top section being softer...

A lot of these patents are effectively a "don't sell in my backyard" notice. Often the inventor has just produced his own rip-off version to rush down to the patent office in his own country after seeing the product elsewhere. International patents blew the bottom out of this practice.

Early cup style goggles were reworked Fernez smoke goggles with alloy cups, then rim seals were added and the natural progression to moulded rubber cups with integral face seals followed, with or without metal lens clamps.

With enormous hydrodynamic drag if you are a swimmer, not all divers are, such as those involved in underwater work.

Note the vent holes to let air out as you dive down when the foot pockets are pointing upwards.

Practical Water Electric Submersible for Underwater Activities

Just reviewing some topics when found this again. The protective shroud grids would have been to avoid lawsuits when an owner foolishly stuck their hand in the prop with it turning. They detract from hydrodynamic efficiency, but you remove them at your own risk.

Rejig of Saucer Style Titanium Dive Watch 2000m (maybe)

The saucer watch is under review, so I thought I would buy something similar. Makes a change from my Tuna's and only 50 mm in diameter. Bought it on its looks. Kind of heavy at first, then you don't notice it. Pity they don't do it as a quartz, or titanium, but these things can change over time.

Rejig of Saucer Style Titanium Dive Watch 2000m (maybe)

When you wear 52 mm in titanium Tunas it is surprising how big this looks when it is only 47 mm. I think watches start at 44 mm unless someone is rather tiny.

Another way to improve the grip on the bezel by using peripheral indents. This leaves the saucer shape of the case more or less intact.

A survivor Magnum shell, some tossed away had a big dent in the percussion cap after a misfire, they then went straight back to Davy Jones's locker.

    Farallon shark dart

What it was a copy of, my buddy had bought the original Sea Hornet. No licence required in those days, anyone could own a shotgun or a pea rifle, i.e. a .22. Those days are now long gone. Later Sea Hornet 12 gauge had a hex form on the centre section to afford a better grip when unscrewing the...

    Farallon shark dart

In my youth I made my own copy of the Sea Hornet 12 gauge powerhead and used my Dad's lathe to turn it up out of bronze and then had it all chrome plated. The only difference was the knurling as I used a parallel line knurl, not a crosshatch as used on the Sea Hornet. These were heavy gadgets to...
