    Deco hand signal?

Maybe this is a UK thing? I can't remember being taught a specific deco sign, maybe as it should be expected, but the "ascent thumb" with the other hand over it as a ceiling was definitely something I was taught, and we used it a lot for safety stops. Along with signalling the time or the depth...

Connecting transmitter pod to 1st stage

That's the same configuration I use on my set up, but after some time (half a season) the o rings in the spool do need cleaning or you get a bit of gunk in there causing little bubbles. What I found while cleaning is that the tiny o-ring can get stuck in the neck of the Pod, not come out with...

What cylinders work as slung stages / bailouts?

And now I've found the time to try them out too!

    Scuba Tank Size

I like my steel 300bar 12l as a single, yes it’s a 20kg cylinder, but I just have to carry that weight on my belt with my 232bar 12l cylinder. The Faber 12l seem to be ok, I’ve got a pair of those too. I may have a problem. To be fair the guy I got it off said it was too heavy for him.

    Knots for easy cutting

I've started using a bit of bungee cord with an overhand knot tied in it to make a loop. I cowhitch that to the boltsnap and then loop it 2/3 times around the thing I'm attaching to then stretch the end over the boltsnap. There's enough slack to pull it away from the hose etc a little and swipe...

How often do you check up on your buddy during a dive?

I think like many things how often and where/when you check on a buddy is circumstantial. I try to stay with my buddy, but naturally if they no a site better you end up lagging as you are waiting for them to show the way I find if I am designated lead I check more regularly. If I am with a...

How to extinguish a Li-ion battery fire

At uni I did a project on electric motorbikes and we were required to have a sandbox (literally) to keep them in during experiments and to cover them in the event of a fire.

What cylinders work as slung stages / bailouts?

I may have accidentally acquired a set of Faber twin 12s, no idea how that happened, just appeared in my car somehow. Now to get the order in for the new wing and reg, no idea how those'll arrive either, magic?

What cylinders work as slung stages / bailouts?

Yeah I’ve been out with Divers Down, lift an absolute revelation! I can understand a good reaming for that. Time limits on tides in the channel are super important. When I was racing a couple of weeks ago boats in about a 500nm2 area were being asked to look for a missing guy. You should have...

What cylinders work as slung stages / bailouts?

I’ve been mostly diving with a 300b 12l but have experimented with using an Ali80, in a training quarry, like independent doubles. Yep J/109, done about 6000nm offshore racing on it in the last 4 years. Just come back from the Fastnet too.

What cylinders work as slung stages / bailouts?

Thanks for the input all, I’m in the position of being on the verge of wanting to extend my dives a little, so I’m going to have to get a second set of regs and tweak my hose layouts a little. I’m trying to work out the best thing to do, straight to twins? Get a stage/pony of an appropriate...

What cylinders work as slung stages / bailouts?

So this is something that I have searched the internet for and wanted a range of experiences. What cylinders work as stages or bailouts that can be slung? Obviously the most common is the ubiquitous Ali80 / 11.1l but what else works well? 7l steels? 12l steels even? Are there any that really...

UK scuba training - my experience so far

I seem to have had the opposite experience of the volunteer system than some others, it varies from club to club significantly! The club I first joined was well organised and managed to get me through Ocean Diver in about 6 weeks, we arranged a schedule of Wednesday nights at the social club...

OOA after only a few minutes with a full tank at 17m

Why to which part? We should be opening valves with a gentle finger hold to avoid mashing them into the stops and damaging things, see the photos of damaged o-rings that were posted by Miyaru. As to why I crack back a tiny bit, no real reason apart from it feels the right thing to do to me...

Plymouth diver lost - Devon coast, UK

Interestingly enough the race that I was sailing in at the time had this year, for the first time, mandated that all competitors carry an AIS SART on top of the EPIRB that all boats had to carry already.

Plymouth diver lost - Devon coast, UK

I was sailing past the area on Sunday and there was a regular Maday Relay on VHF16 telling all vessels from Salcombe to Lizard and 20 nm offshore to keep a lookout for a diver "in a black drysuit with no surface protection markers"

OOA after only a few minutes with a full tank at 17m

In theory we should all be opening the valves holding the handle only fingertip tight anyway, this should prevent it being jammed into the stop and knackering the internals or binding. I personally crack the valves back so they’re fractionally off the stop, literally a degree or two of rotation.

(Question for Instructors)Time in confined water OWD course

2 hours sounds very short. When I did my basic skills (BSAC Ocean Diver) we did 5 sessions that ran like this: 2030: Arrive at pool 2035: Dry brief plan 2040: Change 2045: Prepare kit 2100: Swimming Club leave pool, we get in 2200: Get out of pool 2205: Rinse Kit, shower and wet debrief 2210...

Eon core versus sheerwater perdix AI

I’m sure you’ll be happy either way! For me the Core is all I think I’ll need, though I’m intrigued by the idea of gradient factors coming to the Steel, at that point the main argument against the Suuntos goes and in the UK their prices are much more attractive. I’d hope if it went to the...
